is ranexa used in the uk? just wondering if it is used, if anyone has any input on any patient that takes it. its only been approved for just over a year over here and is a last ditch pill only to be given to patients who have no relief from their angina drugs.

Hi,
No I don't think it is used, I've not heard of it in our ICU or CCU and it's certainly not in our bnf. From what I can gather drugs can come out in the states for a few years before we get them ( I used to work in clinical drug trials)

According to their website it is ONLY licensed in the US - must be very new?

Not a drug I've heard of and as already mentioned not in the BNF so I doubt it is used
i always thought that usually the drugs are in the uk first as the fda doesnt always pass things. over here you cant buy zovirax, ibuprofen gel or co-codamol over the counter, codeine is a prescription only drug, as are the other 2 things. have searched the ranexa website but coudnt see whether it was in the uk or not.
but i now saw an article about the fda which more or less said that drugs get on the market and are relied upon the patient who gets them to report adverse reactions.
Well, kind of true (waiting for patients to report adverse effects).
But, before a drug even hits the market it will have to have undergone several clinical trials (from phase I to phase III) taking up to approx. 10 years!! Although, side effects can be downplayed and as long as they are mentioned on the leaflet as possible it kind of covers them.
And as for drugs that you can't buy over the counter in the US, there are loads that you can buy that you can't here - I'm always amazed in Walgreens!!

It's not in the BNF but this info in Wikipedia is illuminating http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranolazine
thanks fonenurse, tried to get as much info as i can but its all been a bit hazy, just wanted to compare results and whether anyone knew a patient who had taken it, but now see that its only licensed in the us. will have to pursue it over here.
