Hi all! I'm so glad to have found this forum.
I will be moving to Saratoga Springs with my husband and 3 children this summer. We are permanently relocating to the area due to a job opportunity for my husband in Albany. I have been an ICU RN in Connecticut for 17 years. I know I'll never be able to duplicate my current hourly rate, but I'm getting nervous that the NY pay rate is significantly lower. Anyone out there willing to give me some RN hourly rate samples. Include your clinical ladder level and years of experience if possible.
Also, any employer suggestions? I'm not sure if I want to make the 35 minute trek into Albany. Any opinions on Saratoga Hospital or Glens Falls Hospital? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm very excited, but very nervous. I have a great paying job now and I'm not so sure the "cost of living" is much different for Saratoga Springs vs. the shoreline of Connecticut to warrant a huge pay cut.
Thanks all.

Lucky you. Saratoga Springs is great. The housing costs have really risen in Saratoga Springs over the past 3 yrs. but certainly not nearly as much as Conn. I am constantly in Saratoga Springs, but live closer to Albany. I do not work in the ICU, though I have worked in critical care in the past. However, that was in NYC.
Though Glens Falls Hospital and Saratoga Hospital are far closer, St. Peters far and away has the better reputation re how nurses are treated. St.Peter's is in Albany. Because Saratoga has expaned so much recently, hopefully things will improve in the hospital setting. Why not try to see if you can work some per diem through an agency and try a bunch of the hospitals?

Hey you're the best! So far, I'm trying to get over my shock with what I am finding out. Apparently we're well paid now Missy. Who knew?

I agree that you should try an agency to get a feel for the hospitals. Saratoga is a small hospital. I did my clinicals for school there and at Glens Falls. Neither hospital does CABG surgeries.
I work at Ellis and enjoy it. We just opened a new ICU - 2 floors, 38 beds. State of the art. It's located in Schenectady.

Lola....hello and welcome to the Northeast! It's beautiful up here...year-round.....especially in the Adirondack mountains, right where Saratoga is.
As for where to work, I know that Ellis in Schenecatdy has just opened a state of the art ICU....and there aren't enough nurses to keep the beds full. Poor planning by the administration I suppose. Also I know the RNs are at odds with the higher ups about their contract, which expired in April '06. Nothing is settled yet but the RNs are fuming over what happened with their pension and health care coverage. You may want to do agency work, as suggested before....to feel out the area hospitals as for working conditions, drive times... Good luck!
