Can't go back to old place of employment because.....

I left my job at a ALF a month ago to take a better position (big promotion) at an ALF closer to my home. When I left a gave a standard notice and left on what I thought were good terms. We had a family event at my old job planned for next weekend. I planned to go so that i could see the residents again and say goodbye to a lot of the family members that I didn't get a chance to say goodbye to. Today, I got an email from an old co-worker saying that our old boss doesn't think it would be a good idea for me to come to the party because it would be 'awkward'. WHY? I left on good terms. I work 35 miles away from this facility now so it's not like I would be competing with their business. The only thing I can think of is when I turned in my notice I gave 2 weeks and my old boss wanted a month. I told her I could not do a month and she was irritated about that. I am just really offended because I worked for her for a long period of time. Why would it be awkward? I am really upset over this. I have never left a job and not been welcome back to visit. This seems very strange to me. I'd like your thoughts.

Why not call your former boss and ask if it is OK to attend.

You are basing your post on second hand information from a former co-worker. You need to get your information directly from the source.

Perhaps your friend is trying to prevent you from attending for reasons having nothing to do with your boss. Perhaps your former boss is worried that you would try to "recruit" on your visit, but would change his mind if you reassured him otherwise. Perhaps the event is intended for staff only, which you are no longer. The only way to know is to ask.

My friend would not do anything like that. The event is for families, residents, and in the past just about anyone that wants to come. All kinds of people that are not staff come. I emailed her a few weeks ago to ask permission and never heard anything back. I just emailed her again, so we'll see!

I wouldn't even bother to call and ask the old boss IF the event is public, in other words if anyone outside the facillity can come, I would just show up. IF the event is just for the workers and patients/family at the facillity however, calling your old boss is appropriate acting like you never received any e-mail. It is always better to discuss issues one-on-one rather then listening/hearing something third party.
