Cannot work someone used my name

Published

I am attempting to work agency PRN, but someone used my name numerous times. It shows up on record that I committed crimes, but I did not. I am thinking about changing my name and social security number. How could I go about working and getting a job, or changing my name and getting a new social secrity number. What do I say to a new potential employer about this problem. Do I mention it after the application are before. Please Help.

How awful...probably the fact you travel doesn't help in permanently resolving this. I know identity theft is becoming more common and I feel for you. Hope this gets solved once and for all for you. It must be a real downer as far as morale. :(

Its not true that you can't get a new SS#. Its not easy but not impossible, as long as you have evidence of the fraud and follow the steps they recommend. According the SSA, they definitely will not give you a new # if any of the following are taking place: you are declaring bankruptcy, you have no real evidence that your SSN is being used fraudulently, or if they have any reason to believe you are trying to get a new number to avoid legal or financial responsibility. They are going to want to see evidence of the fraud, including a police report, and also evidence that you're working with all three of the major credit bureaus to resolve the problem.

Changing your name will not make the situation go away because the SSN and other identifying information still ties the criminal activity to you. An FBI fingerprint check won't help you either because the FBI already knows you're not the person they're looking for, and the only thing you're ever going to get from them is a 'no hits' response, which means your fingerprints are not in their criminal database.

If I were you I would write a letter to SSA, explaining the whole situation, and sending them copies of all the correspondence you've received from the credit bureaus about the fraud as well as the police reports. They know that identity theft is a big thing these days so as long as you have a legitimate case I don't see why they would refuse to give you a new number.

Thank you. I will go to the SS web site now. I wonder why my lawyer did not mention this. Thank you
