Canada nursing

Published

I'm so frustrated here I need to vent. I have RN license and worked in the States, recently moved to Canada. However, obtaining RN license here is pain in the butt omg...why they require so much when I do have active RN license and it takes FOREVER. I got married to Canadian so i had no choice but to move here, but pay is low, dinasuar hospital, almost no positions available at the hospital, 3 shifts, no nursing assistants, and I paid almost 800 usd to get the license and this is only the first step!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ugh. There are only 2 big hospitals in the city and they are NOT looking for any RNs. U kidding me right now...

Canada never had an ADN program. The had 3 year diploma program which was eliminated after 2005. Since then except for the province of Quebec all schools offer 4 year BSN. It's too late to get admission for September. Either you start a BSN in USA or you start BSN in Canada in September 2020. No college/University offer January start date.

Hope that helps.

Alberta graduated their last two year diploma class in 2009. While it was never referred to as an ADN programme, it was definitely a diploma course and not a degree. The current PN programme in Alberta is basically the old RN course with extra electives added in. It's pretty much the same across the country now.

Any RN who graduated prior to that date is grandfathered in. There are very few RN to BScN courses left.

Will it take long to get my license transferred? How about taking my ADN here then find nursing program to take my BSN in Canada?

Except for Quebec, all Canadian nursing education (RN) start with a BSN. However, foreign nurses can transfer their license with ADN (ex. Australia, South Korea, USA). There are RN to BSN programs in Canada but very few in number and they're mostly private (costly). To be honest there's no difference in pay or anything for being BSN so a lot of foreign nurses don't bother to get their BSN when they come here.. It's your choice but your license transfer will be a lot easier if you come with a BSN.. OR you take your BSN in Canada to skip the horrible and long license transfer process altogether. (You will need to take another assessment test if you only have ADN on top of your NCLEX and the worst thing that can happen is that they will make you take a refresher course just to get your RN license in Canada)

Thank you so much for the information! ?

Do you have any update? I just graduated high school, I live in Texas and I'm planning to go to nursing school. I really want to live in Canada and settle there in the future.

Just as dayandnight said, the best way is to go to school in Canada if you're planning to work in Canada in the future. You can start building connections during clinical.

If finance is an issue, then doing the nursing program locally would make more sense. You can transfer later but there is a process and I heard it can be tedious.

Canada has a Registered Practical Nurse diploma from colleges and Registered Nurse degree from universities.

I would suggest you to choose the bsn nursing degree program instead of ADN.

Yes and if you just have your ADN, there will be a greater chance that you will have to take your refresher program here. Including the refresher program it will take about 2-3 years. There are only a couple number of private schools that offer RN to BSN program in Canada
