Seneca (Yorkgate) Practical Nursing 01/2017

Hi there! I attended the the Seneca@Yorkgate program. First off, the campus is in a mall, there were a few of us who were surprised when we found out. While the environment isn't quite like a regular campus environment, the professors were great. Some were a little tough, but that happens no matter what institution you go to. Also, it can get a little suffocating being in such a small campus, but you get used to it. The biggest issues our class had was usually with administration. It was hard to get information, or to get them to listen to our concerns. Maybe by the time you get there they'll have most of the things fixed, I've heard they are working on it.

Finally, I'd like to mention that the last semester, in which you do consolidation, is held at the King Campus. It's only one class on a Monday, but just a warning so you're not surprised if you didn't know already.

Overall I think it was a pretty good program. Administration was not the best, but you won't have to deal with them too much.

Hi Ashfornursing,

I'm happy to see your response as there is nothing online about this particular campus. I was shocked when I found it was in a mall, I'm think twice about going to this school because of that lol.

I am wondering if placements are in the City of Toronto, and if you had any trouble getting the placements you wanted? How is life after graduation, were you able to find a job after graduation?

Just got my offer for the program two days ago :) I got an offer for king in sept too but chose this campus because the commute is only 30 minutes for me in contrast to the 1hour and 30 min it would take me to get to king city.

I'm also having a really hard time finding any info on the campus or program . I'm mainly curious about the location of the placements .

I will be going to this school in Jan 2017 also. After long deliberation and thinking about how I will pay for this, I held off entering nursing school in 2016. Running through the numbers over and over I knew I needed to gather more money in the bank so that I didn't have to work so many hours a week while in ns. I applied for 2017 and was lucky enough to get in all schools I applied for. This time before I made a decision (when I accepted Seneca at King city pre health I didn't even know where that city was too well), I did a lot of research. Although I liked Sheridan college in the past, I do not like the Davis campus any longer. I also took a drive to Orangeville to check out Georgian college and was put off with how small things were. I am an Orangeville lover but the school was just too tiny for me. I was disappointed as I wanted to go there. Also, from my house, there is a huge hill that makes me super nervous. I kept picturing the torture I would have to go thru for 2 winters driving up and down that snow & traffic packed hill. I was physically ill thinking how stressed I would be. The next day I ventured to Yorkdale campus for Seneca. I was shocked that it was in a mall and the city is not too great BUT I never hear of any crime or anything really unsavory there. Its off the beaten path for sure. I went in and immediately, the campus reminded me of King Campus and I was pleased. I walked around took it all in. Although very small (and yes, looks like it can be suffocating I guess), it still had more breathing room than say Georgian Orangeville. In any case, I thought about it for a few days and accepted Yorkgate. It is also about 30 mins away from where I live. King Campus (I was also accepted here) is my ideal but the 2 hour commute a day in good traffic was too much sometimes.

Like you JaguarX, I can barely find anything online about student experience. But, I am going in with a positive attitude and will enjoy my journey. I hope others who went there can give us a snippet of life there. Another positive is that parking is free! $500 a year saved is great to me.

Is Yorkgate in the Jane and Finch area? ....you have never heard of any crime in the area?

Personally with your decision between Yorkgate & King I would choose Yorkgate. King is basically in the middle of no where (Farm land), the environment is pretty dull and you have to think about traveling to and from school especially to early classes after a stressful night of studying. Going to a closer campus takes at least that one stress away. the distance between king & yorkgate is about an hour and you have to pay extra fare (if youre taking public transit that is) so do you mind traveling that extra distance ?

That's my take but you should also take into consideration where you feel more comfortable.

I'm dealing with the same issue. I was accepted into King campus for September, York gate for January and Centennial for January also. And each offer has their pros so ive been struggling to make a decision on which to accept.

King - I would like to start nursing asap and actually get a summer Vacation BUT its 1hour & 30 minutes away from me

Yorkgate- much closer to where I live

Centennial - Smaller course load because its flex and closer than king, and i hear they have a great nursing lab but centennial as a college makes me nervous. When I've called with questions about my offer enrollment couldn't even find my acceptance on file so they couldn't answer any questions until I got in contact with admissions finally today

The smaller course load would be great so I can work and probably have a bit more room for family and friends outside of school, but compared to Seneca which every time I've called the staff was great I dont know if Centennial would be the right decision for me.

yes, you are very right. Jane & Finch is NOT ideal but I don't think the school would be at that location if it were not relatively safe. It is not located directly there...I think. I just have never heard anything happening at the campus. I doubt Seneca would keep the campus there if that mall were really unsafe. IDK, it has been going for yrs and yrs and I look at it like that. For me, it is all about saving time and getting a good education. I mean, all schools will give that but going to king campus, although I love farm ville & seneca, literally, was too much. I remember days in my car stuck in traffic and having minor panic attacks thinking of the time I was wasting when I had a mountain of work to do. I know it will be 20x harder in ns so that is why I chose that campus. Also, from google maps, it will take me 1.5hrs to go by bus if I chose to. I might do that to save on insurance per year. All that aside, I really look forward to starting. I am regretting, in a way, putting it off until Jan bc now all I think about is starting and work is driving me nuts (although I am very grateful). :rolleyes:

Hello everyone!

First off, to the writer who said "Is Yorkgate in the Jane and Finch area? You have never heard of any crime in that area?", Yes, the Yorkgate Campus is in the Jane and Finch area. Jane and Finch, just so you know is actually a decent place to live in. I have lived here all my life. The media always focuses on Jane and Finch so much that everyone gets a notion that this area is dangerous. THERE ARE CRIMES EVERYWHERE. There's no safe place in the city.

On a lighter note, I just finished the Seneca College program and graduated this October 2016, wrote my nursing registration exam the same month and passed it this November.

I went to the Part Time Practical Nursing route- which was done at Newnham Campus at Finch and Don Mills. This was ideal for me because I was able to go to work in the morning and take the nursing courses in the evening. I took about 4-5 courses every semester and it took me 2 years to finish everything.

Courses wise:

What I like about Seneca was every course were straight forward and related to the program. (Not unlike other colleges). First semester would be a little overwhelming because you will all juggle your time with the introductory courses: Clinical, Anatomy, Psychology, etc. Make sure to keep all your notes because at the very end, on your final semester, you will have to do a pre-nursing registration exam everything you've learned in the program is testable.

Placement wise:

2nd semester Clinical- Cedarvale Long Term Care

3rd Semester- Sunnybrook

4th Semester- St. Joseph's Health Centre

5th semester/consolidation- Humber River Hospital
