I graduate from FNP school in December. Can you work under a temporary permit (like we did as an RN waiting to take boards) as an NP?

I would doubt it - as you wouldn't have prescriptive authority nor would you be credentialled.

There are always people who try and actually do get around this. I know of at least a few people in our class who worked before they took their boards. It was always a really hazy line that I wouldn't want to walk and I can't imagine a physician or another NP who would work with someone who wasn't legally an NP.
We are in the process of hiring an NP and if they are new grads, they don't see pts or do anything on their own till they are fully licensed and credentialed.

I think it depends on the state you're practicing in. Some allow a new NP to practice for a specific time frame while getting certified. Other states require certification before you can practice as a NP.
But what is your practice/facility going to allow? If you aren't licensed, you can't sign charts, do assessments (as an NP), write scripts, order/interpret tests.
My state will actually do a permit for 90 days pending cert. You have to show that your MSN was conferred, as well as proof that you have applied to test. Those 90 days have to be under your collaborative physician. Just some info I wanted to share.
