Can a psych. Nurse be accepted for a FNP program?

Published

Hello nurses,

I have one year experience as a psych. nurse.

I wish to go back to school for a NP program. Do colleges usually accept candidates in a FNP program who have an experience in psychiatry?

I wish to go for a FNP instead of a Psych. NP.

All feedback will be helpful. Thank you.

Hmmm I'm curious too. I'm sure you could get accepted but the work may be more challenging for you if you only have a psych background.

sure. Just sell your top assessment skills that you've honed as a psych nurse. Any fool can learn a procedure, as they say. It takes skill to know the who, what, when, where, and why of a situation. Just sell the idea that your psych RN experience has made you an excellent critical thinker, I'm sure you will get in somewhere.

No problem at all! Some schools look more into undergrad GPA than actual experience too.

It's possible since I have many friends doing that however it all depends on which schools you're looking at and their requirements. Best of luck to you.

Yes, we have all sorts of nurses in my cohort. I am at Loyola University New Orleans. Also, remember every patient is a psych patient. More patients are seeing the regular physician for these issues.
