can paediatric trained nurses apply to work in the US

Published

I am a paediatric trained nurse in the UK and want to apply to work in the US. I followed the project 2000 nurse training course. I am getting conflicting information from agencies some saying that only general trained nurses can work in the US and others say that the project 2000 training is sufficient. Can anyone help and clarify this for me.

Unfortunately, unless you have completed the needed number of hours in adult medicine, as well as psychiatric nursing, your credentials will not allow you to practise in the US. In the UK,the nurses are trained as specialists, Cananda as well as the US require generalist training before you are permitted to sit for the exams. You will need to make up the required courses.

Let me know if you have any more questions.......... :balloons:

i did the project 2000 but we were the 2nd group since the programme started in 1991 and then the programme was doing the common foundation programme the first 18months and the last 18 you did whatever you had chosen to finish in. so if you did the training before it changed which has been about twice now from what i've observed and heard then you should be able to have done the hrs both theory and practicals which are needed to fulfil the board requirements when you register with a bon.

o'grady peyton would not take me on the only wanted the rgns even after i had registered with the bon and got my go ahead to write the exam.

but one agency tol me if you did not meet the hrs and you are determined to go to the us the answer is to do the hrs and then get the college where you trained to add them on how that would work out i do not know.

its a shame how they have changed the training so much but the main reason a lot of nurses are saying its to make sure in future uk trained nurses can't go work anywhere else coz they have restricted your experience to one field. all the best if you have more questions feel free to send me email.

Work visa as a nanny can take several years to get. If the English nurse has the appropriate classwork completed, they can get a green card in under one year. The nanny position would only give them a temporary work permit.

thanks for that information. i was the last group who followed the project 2000 course and did the 18 month common foundation. hopefully i will have the required hours. the only problem i think i may have is that when you had the option of either a learning disability or mental health placement i chose the learning disability placement, so i may have to do some hours in this area however working in an a&e dept we are often treating children with mental health problems.

The best that I can offer is just to submit your application and see if it is accepted.

Good luck.................. :balloons:
