Hey there everyone,
I am a 2nd quarter nursing student from California, and have already completed The Fundamentals which was 1st quarter. I will be done with Quarter number 2 before I have my summer break. I was wondering if it is possible to omit taking the CNA course, and just take the CNA test in order to work as a CNA over the summer. If anyone knows how I can go about doing this please reply...Thanks...

hi, kiddo!
yes, you can do that here in california. i just had that information at my fingertips a couple of days ago. the california department of health administrates the certification of nursing assistants. here is the link about the information on that for you.
http://www.dhs.ca.gov/lnc/cert/default.htm
you want to download the certification facts booklet which you can link into at the site or go directly to à http://www.dhs.ca.gov/lnc/download/cert/certfacts.pdf
the answer to your question is on page 8 of the booklet (page 14 of the pdf document) in the section on equivalency applicants. best of luck to you! don't stay a stranger to the nursing student forums!

Here in NC, you have to already be a CNA before your'e accepted into the nursing program.

Not everywhere in NC. At Wake Tech we were automatically licensed as CNAI at the end of 2nd semester. The school sent in the applications that we completed. At the end of 5th semester we could chose to pay $28 and get our CNAII certification. I paid and applied because I didn't know how long it would take to receive my ATT after graduation. I wanted the option of working as a CNAII until I could pass the NCLEX.

PC my first semester of nrn 101, I downloaded an application from the department of education. There was an option that nursing students qualified to take the cna test after their the first clinical rotation. I sent back the app with my transcript and the application was approved and I took the test with the american redcross. I paid 93dollars for the skill and theory and I passed the first time

I could not take the CNA test, they said (hospital where I work) I bacame a Nurse Tech after the first semester, and that takes priority. Something like when LPNs become RNs. And Nurse Techs get paid $4/hr more than CNAs at my hospital in North Texas.
I would say just call your local hospital and talk to the nursing recruiter about the guidlines in your state.
