i am about to embark on my journey in to nursing school. i have dreamed of this moment for many years and it is finally happening. i am an older student, wife and mother. i know there are alot of students that fit my profile, and i would love to hear some encouraging feelings on the positive aspects of attending nursing school. i have been hearing a lot of negative feedback and it almost scares me. it makes me think i am really heading in to a war zone. please someone out there reply with some positive thoughts on your experiences. :monkeydance:
I'm so glad you posted this thread! I'm almost 28, married and have a two year old. I returned to school this past Spring and will begin the RN program this Fall. I love school, but I've heard so many scary things about nursing school. It seems like all I've heard of horror stories and warnings.
It's so nice to hear the positive things about this huge step in my life!!
Congratulations on picking one of the most powerful professions on earth today. I have been an RN for 21 years, and though I have seen nursing hit some hard times I continue to encourage nurses to stand up, speak out and let our voices be heard. Without nurses the healthcare system will fall apart (and that's not doctor bashing, just the truth).

Hi There
Well, I don't know about nursing school YET... as I am just now taking all my pre reqs so that all I will have is the nursing classes when the time comes next year. I am very mature... (49 to be exact) but I have wanted to be a nurse since jr. high and all my kids are grown in fact I have three grandbabies... hubby finally said.. honey either go to school or shut up.. so here I am! I have taken 4 clases so far and althou algebra was quite challenging I did learn an awful lot and passed with a high B so I am excited. I too have heard several negative things from some.. but heck.. you won't know til you try.. and if its something you want to do in your heart..you will be fine. I expect I will have a few ups/and downs while in school but gosh.. I dream of walking down and getting my diploma.. I hope and pray my mom and dad will still be here to see it.. they are so excited I have returned.. daddy says he will get free nursing when he's old..ggg he's 72 now!!! enjoy your time in school.. hugs from TN.

nursing school to me has been really hard work, but worth it! it has been a journey that nobody can take away from me and the things i have learned. i am a mother of five, so nursing school has been a real challenge but well worth it. i graduate in 2 more quarters which is exciting!! i think the best things about nursing school are the people you meet, not just the friends you make but the lives you touch. the patients you see smile when you help them feel better and see them go home. those moments to me remind me why i want to be a nurse.
nursing school has changed my life , it reshapes and remodeles your life and adds new things to your personality and gives you the chance to react and see new and different peoples and personalities. you will be exposed to different cultures and backgrounds from all over the world . beleive me you will not have this chance in any other job . good luck and my best wishes
This is the first time I've written anything on allnurses - so I hope it comes out all right. I am just taking classes now trying to get into the nursing program and I have been scared too by some of the things I have read. I am an older student (42yo) and wonder if I am crazy to be doing this. I have thought about going to school for nursing for a long time though so I am determined to continue. I hope you will persevere and good luck!
Okay-I have read a lot of the replies. I am a 49 yr old RN that did a 3 semester accelerated second degree BSN program. I started it at 48 as an empty nester because I originally wanted to be a nurse when I was little kid of 8. My parents talked me out of it. So I ended up as a teacher. I loved teaching the little kids, but the rest of it was very boring. I love being a Pediatric nurse. As for school, my husband says that it was harder than it looked and harder than it appeared but it was all worth it because he wanted me to realize my dream. I still pinch myself when I am on the unit. I have dreamed of this for so many years. School was hard, but you need to find yourself a good study buddy and make the time to study together. You will feel like you have no life, and that your ten ton books are all you have, but the important thing to remember is that this too shall pass. You will make it. The other thing is, do those NCLEX practice questions. I liked Saunders the best. My school believed in beginning to test like the NCLEX from the first semester. I had a really hard time adjusting, but I finally got it. Just do the questions over and over again. You will make it. I passed the NCLEX the first time and I was certain that I had flunked it---You will make it and as an older more experienced student, you will be much sought after. Good luck.
hey u no kidding you are heading into a war zone but its all positive i'm in my second semester even though i dread going back tommarrow i wanna do better nursing school is going to help you realize how much you are capable of and u are going to learn LOTS LOTS OF WAY TO DISIPLINE YOURSELF U WILL HAVE TO DISIPLINE YOURSELF FOR STUDY TIME, LETS PUT IT THIS WAY U WILL ENJOY SCHOOL BUT HATE THE PAPERWORK I ABSOULTLY LOVE THEORY AND CLINICALS BUT WHEN IT COMES TO DIAGNOSIS, PROCEDURE, SURGICAL, AND MED CARDS THEY ARE INTRESTING BUT VERY TIME CONSUMING THEN YOU HAVE TO MAKE A CAREPLAN WHICH I DON'T KNOW MAYBE YOUR SCHOOL WILL HAVE YOU DO CONCEPT MAPING OR NOT BUT ITS A PAIN. BUT KEEP IN MIND YOU WILL MAKE IT IF U WANNA BE A NURSE
truth i hate nursing school and at lot of the crap you have heard is the truth but at the same time i am doing this for me.. the best part will be graduation..but the end is worth it all.. do it for you and ignore the rest.... woman are woman they are the same no matter what they wear... remember that after school... they don't change with an eduacation...
Personally, I feel it is easier returning to school as a "mature student." I feel because of my maturity instructors are much more respectful. I graduated with a BSN at 22yrs and had a horrible experience. I graduated with an MBA at 28 and had a wonderful experience. I have been an ICU nurse for 17 yrs and absolutely love it. However, I always had a part-time administrative position elsewhere to keep my MBA skills up. Now I am going for my Master's in Nursing because I want to become a professor. I will however remain in nursing in order to keep my skills. I felt my BSN professors did not have strong clinical skills and they were outdated because they left the profession 10-20 yrs ago. I am doing an on-line program through the University of Phoenix. I love the program. I only have to put up with the professor for 6 weeks. I can handle anything for six weeks--after 17 yrs in the ICU--I am virtually bomb proof. I think you will find a nursing career very rewarding because you can do so much with it. I have done home health, flight nursing, critical care transports with an ambulance company, I write policies, procedures and I have written several programs. Currently, I am implementing a PICC line program that I wrote several months ago. I also make more than most family physicians and I have a lot more variety.
