Can I get work in the UK

I am considering a move to London. I have been an RN for 30 years and have experience in all areas of nursing. Would I be able to get a job there as an American? What kind of preparation would I need? Do they allow traveling assignments to the UK from the US?

First you would need to meet NMC requirements for overseas nurse, so depending on how long your training was would depend on being accepted with the NMC. Secondly very hard to find a employer willing to assist you with a work permit although a lot would depend on experience and whether you have experience in a areas on the occupation list as not all nurses are on that list. thirdly London is very very expensive to live

:crying2: Good day all

Well lets see I am a South African nurse who recently in a rusch had to enter the UK because my husband was transfered here by the international company he works for. Leaving me to try and register on to the NMC from the UK as the company could not wait for me to try and sort out all the requirements from my home country. I have been a nurse for the past 12 years and love and live for nursing now geting on to the NMC have most definitly proven to become my bigest nightmare ever. I wrote the IELTS tests which by the way is not the cheapest thing to do and mist the required 7 in 2 catogories. this to most of you might sound silly but in 2007- 6.5 scores was exeptable to the nmc now they have up the grade to 7 nursing in 1st world countries might be a good paying job where I come from it is not if you do not nurse for the love of nursing then you dont study nursing. I am honistly starting to come to the conclusion that the UK unlike other countries in the world does not need nurses.

I would disagree that the UK doesn't need nurses it does but it also has to protect the UK citizens and I have seen it when I worked in hospitals of foreign nurses not able to speak good English and everyone from patients to staff suffered because they couldn't understand them. Standards have to be set

Thank you.

Yes, I agree that there has to be standards otherwise we would not be working in such a respected profesion, I should just scrape some money together and redo the test and propebly stop feeling sorry for myself.

thanks again

Good luck and just keep practising your English especially in the areas you didn't do as well in

Hi! I'm a nurse in the Philippines. I was born in England but raised here (Philippines), so I carry both citizenship. I was hoping to move back to England after a long time. After checking the NMC requirements, I found out I still need to finish my one year of experience here. Is there a possibility that I could get my NMC papers approved if I go back to England without finishing my 1 year experience? And do I still need to take my Ielts exam even if I'm a British citizen? Could I also register for NMC in UK even if I didn't study there? I'm really hoping I could get some answers. Thanks so much! :)

You will be classed as an overseas nurse unless you have trained in the UK. You will need to meet the NMC requirements for registration and if they say 1 years experience then that is what you will need. Even if you have uk citizenship because you haven't trained here you can't register until you meet those requirements. Not sure about the ILETS I think with a British passport you will be exempt but you will need to check with the NMC.
