I know that no one can tell me a definite answer because the BON looks at each case individually, but I was wondering if anyone can tell me some of their experiences. I got arrested when I was 17 for a misdemeanor charge of shoplifting (I know, very stupid), anyway, I just had to pay a fine. I live in Georgia and you are considered an adult at the age of 17 in GA, so this is still on my record now. I am currently in school to become an LPN, but I hope to continue school after this to become an RN. I was wondering if this misdemeanor charge would fall under moral turptitude or something. I am worried that after all of this hard work, I will not be able to obtain my license. Can anyone tell me anything that you know about it??? Thank you all in advance!!

I would say that would fall under the no no crimes but being 5 years out I do not know.
Theft is a problem since you will be in a direct position to steal from your pts, you will be responsible for safeguarding their valuables but each case is based upon it's own merits.
I would say I would rather have a DUI than a shop lifting charge....

Go review the nursing school criminal background history that you are thinking of attending. They will tell you what convictions they look for an a background check. I know on our policy, most crimes have a time frame of 7 years for it to count. And if I were you, I'd contact a lawyer and see if those records can be expunged.

I have never heard of a state that expunges misdemeanors. Felonies, but not misdemeanors. Odd. But true. I am in the same position. I also have theft on my record. And have checked into expungment. No such luck. And looking hard for a job, with a record. It's not good.

I met a lady in Wyoming many years ago who told me she had killed her husband. She became an RN after serving her time in prison for murder.
Really? I find that a bit scary that someon can expunge a FELONY charge on their record! For my nursing school, any one who is a convicted felon is automatically disqualified. Anyway in my state a felony is forever. Some misdemeanors can be expunged, but its pretty costly with lawyers and such.

To the original poster - as you can see; this is an individual scenario - best bet is to take it up with the BON.
