how can I find a job in nursing speciality areas?

Published

Hi all,

I am an international student but just graduated from an usa nursing school. I tried to apply the H-1B visa. However, my lawyer told me that I have to find a job which requires BSN to do so, such as nursing speciality. I'm interested in oncology and adult health care. Are these two inculded in the nursing speciality areas? Is anybody entered these areas when they were just graduated from school with BSN degree? Also, is it not necessary to take the license exam for nurse practitioner to apply the H-1B license if I will finish my master degree later on? Sorry for many questions. Thanks all of your kindly responses.

You cannot set the exam as a nurse practitioner until you have completed a Master's level program for your chosen speciality. I am not sure what your lawyer is talking about. I don't understand why he is telling you that you have to choose a speciality. You do not need to have a "speciality " area to get hired by a hospital. You also do not have to have a BSN although there are a few hospitals that require that in certain areas. What state are your applying in. Do you need to have a hospital willing to hire you before you can get a visa? Is that the problem? You can email me privately about this. I have some experience with this type of thing. This may be difficult given the current job situation over here. We are saturated with new grads right now who can't find jobs. Where were you trained?

Take a look around this site -- there is a huge amount of discussion about this. Basically, there is no way a new graduate qualifies as a "specialist."

Hi Dianne, I have a BSN. My lawyer told me that if I can only apply a general RN post, then I can't apply H-1B visa because the this post doestn't require a bachelor degree. So he suggests me to find a hospital job, working in "speciality" areas, such as oncology, acute, OR.... because such areas mostly required bachelor dgree nurses and needs critical and skillful nurses. Besides, I am applying for the license in PA. So, if I can't find a job in such areas as I mentioned before, I can only stay in USA for one year as OPT. What is your email address? Thanks so much for your help.

You can work in special areas by applying in any hospital. Most (if i'm not mistaken or depends upon their policies) let you choose the area you want to be assigned in (but it isn't guaranteed that you'll be placed there) during your clinicals on your residency training. The training department usually looks for a match in skills, personality, attitude etc. between the nurse and the area. If they think you fit the area well, there's a good chance that they'll place you there. But who knows for sure, no one unless you're the daughter of one of the training supervisors or something. But you can have a better chance at being in the area you desire if you show promise during the training--participate in discussions, be active, let them know who you are. Otherwise if you blend in, you're not really going to stand out. Remember, it's a competitive world out there especially in this profession.

Good Luck! ;)

Thanks, neonatal. I don't know anyone in the hospital. If I can only show them that I can make a promise to work in the hospital for few years and show them my honesty, patience and humility, do you think that it will increase my chance to be accepted to work in the special area? My GPA is not so high , I don't have confidence that the hosptial will hire me in the special area. What do you think? Thanks for your advices.:redbeathe
