can these all be given together?

Published

Hello everyone,

Just wondering...if there is a pt going through alcohol and opiate withdrawal and are being medicated, can they receive serax, clonidine, and vistaril all at the same time for their complaints? Or would the serax that is typically used for the alcohol withdrawal also help the anxiety from the opiate withdrawal (and thus the vistaril should be held off on)?

thoughts?

thanks!

I've seen them given at the same time.

yes they can, but would monitor bp.

thanks! if it were you, would you give the clonidine per protocol and serax per taper and maybe hold off on the vistaril (PRN) since they are already getting serax? or would give you give both vistaril and serax at the same time for anxiety? the prn vistaril is part of the opiate detox orders, fyi....

it's going to depend on where they are in the detox process, and the dosages of ea med...

as well as how the pt presents to you.

serax's effects don't last long, imo.

regardless of its half life, i see it wearing off after 2-3 hrs.

I would give the serax and the clonodine. Then, depending on the pt's HR/BP and level of agitation, I would give the hydroxyzine. just my $0.02

My opinion and experience say give the serax and clonodine and use the vistaril for "breakthrough" symptoms....
