Anyone know if you can get a student loan if you're getting financial aid? I am unsure how this works. If you go through your school (which is the route i'd be taking) do you ask for a certain amount or do they just give you what they give you? Does it take a while to get? Lots of questions huh? If anyone knows, please fill me in, I have no idea how this stuff works. Thanks so much!

Hi there,

Yes, you can get a loan even if you are receiving a Pell Grant. They would be the one to tell you how much you are eligible for though. Definately talk to your financial aid department.

Hope this helps!

Hi. Thanks for the reply Jen, I am oblivious to these things. I'll definately talk to the financial aid people. I hope it isn't too late to apply for one. :imbar

Yes. When I went to school and got a BA. I had gotten both a pell grant as well as a student loan. This time around going for my ADN I'm not elgible either. Fortunately through my work place I've found alternative methods for myself. :) Shell

I have always recieved a loan with my pell.

Usually your financial aid dep't will have the paperwork or you can go to websites like sallie mae www.salliemae.com

Also make sure to check on subsidized and unsubsidized loans.

The way is has worked for me was: they used my grants and fin. aid and then about 6-7 weeks into the semester I would receive my refund on my loan-whatever they didn't use, even if it was the whole thing.

Good luck!

I don't think there is a time limit for applying like with grants. I was just told that I could only get so much money, and the amount depends on if you are a freshmen or higher. The amount your given is for the whole year. At my school you have to pay for your tuition and then they reimburse you later. Most school I think give you the money before tuition is due. I hate the way my school has things set up.

yes you can I do each semester. I can get $3350 each semester. More if you are not a freshman. In KY if you work in the state after you become a nurse They will forgive 20% of the total loan for each year you work with no time limit. So it is like FREE money really. The web site that has the information about it is the www.studentloanpeople.com Check it out and I hope this helps ya.

Oh, thanks for asking these questions! I've been trying to find out the same things today, myself. Very informing on the whole pell + loans, because that's what I was trying to figure out. Thanks. :)

Yes you can, I am :)
