Hi everyone,
I'm a Florida nurse who's employed full-time by a large hospital in the Ft. Lauderdale area. I've been called to Federal jury duty, and I've just been seated on a trial which the judge says will last for 3 weeks or longer. Naturally, I'm obligated to report to the courthouse Monday through Friday from approximately 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. throughout the course of the trial.
I informed my clinical manager about this last night and she wasn't very pleased. She also told me that if I'm scheduled to work during any weekends during my course of jury duty, that I would need to work those shifts. To me this seems outrageous and I'm feeling very exploited! Has this ever happened to anyone else? Does my employer have legal grounds to demand that I work these hours? Thanks!
This is hilarious... There should not even be a post about this situation. If my manager told me that I'd have to work during the weekend my response would be, "So after 5 days of jury duty u want me to come up in here for two twelves back to back?" and whatever the response is say "ok"... Then just call in on both days...
I'd be browsing the newspaper job section in the evenings after jury duty just in case I get fired from calling in...
The reaction from the clinical manager was rather negative, and her reply was---"I always know what to say to get out of jury duty."
.
I call BS on that.
I've been called for jury duty 4 times (once for Federal).
There are very limited reasons that can get one out of jury duty, and I never qualified for any of them.

My hospital has a pretty clearly written policy about this. If you have jury duty on a day that you are scheduled, the hospital pays for your full shift, it is coded separately so its not taken out of PTO or vacation time. If I'm scheduled the weekend I work the weekend. On the states end, if I come in on a day off I get $40 from the state (woohoo!). It actually worked out in my favor since I didn't have to report to jury until 9am, left promptly at 4, and still got paid for 12 hour shifts that I didn't have to work. I didn't begrudge working the weekend, not a big deal.
