My CNA certification lapsed while my military husband was stationed somewhere I wasn't able to find work. Now that we've moved and I'm ready to work again, I don't have a valid certification. Is there any way to challenge the exam or would I have to pay to go through another training program? I am starting an RN program in January but am not currently a nursing student.

Call your state and ask them.
Also, sometimes you can get a job as a PCT with one nursing school clinical rotation, so if you can wait, you try and go that route.
That's how it is around here, anyway.

in MN you can take the exam without going through the training course, see if your state offers that?

In TX you can get the CNA cert after a year of nursing school, without the CNA training. However, the training is only 6 weeks, so why wait? Otherwise, contact the agency that certifies applicants (may be the state health department)

Some facilities will train you to be a CNA. Some states will allow you to challenge the CNA exam after your first semester of nursing school. I went to school in Massachusetts, where nursing students could challenge the written part of the CNA exam, but still had to pass the practical exam.

I had to challenge the CNA exam when I was failed by a person who was not watching me do my skills, and I got to re-take the skills portion for free. But I guess see what your state says.
