can i apply for CA NCLEX-RN even w/o local board?

Published

hi suzanne! can i apply for california nclex-rn even i'm still waiting for the recent local board exam??? my friend successfully convinced me that we must apply as early as now for california nclex since the application takes 4-6 mos. is it possible????

are we doing beneficial for us or are we just waste our money by applying nclex while waiting for the local board???? what if we never made it in local board, does CA BON deny our application?????

thank u very much

Sorry, but I do not agree with what you have posted. There is no law in the US that states that someone needs to take the local exam where they are from, actually it just states that a completed set of transcripts are required. This is per US Immigration. The issue only comes into play if the nurse is going to write the CGFNS exam, then they need the local exam results for that in most cases.

You can actually get a license issued to you by several states before you have ever been in the US, ever. NY, NM, AZ and some others will actually send you a hard license without a SSN#.

And even if you are a US citizen, but trained out of the US, and wish to work in a state that still requires the CGFNS exam, you will need to take that exam.

Licensure and immigration are two completely separate issues. Remember that anyone that comes to the US to work as an RN in most cases is coming with a green card, and that is only permanent residency, it is not citizenship. That requires five years to do.

----------------------------------------

The NLE exam is not required for you to take the NCLEX exam, the issue becomes that you did take it. In that case, CA will not make an official decision until you present them with passing results. And as mentioned above, if not passing; why would a state want you to work there if you can't pass your local boards? Again, if you never took the NLE, then you would be all set, and nothing to stop or delay you.

Hi suzanne. can you please tell me the states that sends you a hard license even without a SSN# after passing the NCLEX exam? Thank you

Suzanne has already mentioned a few in her statement that you have quoted but even if you have not received your license because you haven't got a SSN you do receive a letter stating that you meet requirements and can get your hard license once you are in the US with a SSN

i now understand what you mean but my general nursing in Nigeria took 3years before i passed my bord exams in Nigeria. Not 2years as you do it here in US.We did alot more than the 2yr programme could do here. That is why i was approved by CA BON to take my nclex after evaluating my transcript.I am now US-RN.

Then your training met US requirements of RN and not ADN. Congratualtions and good luck in your new life

Yes, I'm currently in the US right now but I dont have an SSN yet. I'm planning to apply for NCLEX to a state that do not require an SSN upon applying and when you pass, they will give you a hard license even if without SSN. Can you please tell me the other states aside from NM, NY and AZ. Thank you

what type of visa are you currently in the US with? Not sure why you are determined to go to a state that will give license without SSN.

If you are in the US with a tourist visa I am surprised you say you have until may as usually you only get 6 months. Also you can not go through the process of AOS as no visas due to retrogression and no idea when it will be resolved. Doesn't matter what state you get your license because if you want to endorse you have to meet that state requirements and can not work until you get that license. For example you apply for licensure in AZ pass NCLEX and they issue you with a hard license but you want to work in CA then you can not endorse because you do not have a SSN therefore you can not work in CA.

ok I got your point. I can only have my license once I can present to them my SSN. Well, its fine with me that i cant get it right after i pass the exam.

I had my tourist visa extended, so that is why i have until may. So you mean to say, I cannot apply for NCLEX exam to any state without an SSN? Or if i can, can I know which state and how will I or what will I indicate in my application form that i dont have an SSN? Thank you

By the way, what is AOS?

You can take NCLEX with any state, you do not need SSN but some states will not issue hard license without SSN, you will recieve a letter stating you meet state requirements for RN. On the application you just leave it blank where it asks for SSN.

You are very lucky to have your tourist visa extended. AOS is adjustment of status and without it you will not get a visa or permission to work. No guarantee come Oct that you will be able to do this

Thank you for that useful information. Now,please confirmed these informations I got

1.about fingerprint card and criminal background check:

Do i have to ask fingerprinting and criminal backgroud request from the BON?

Do I receive any letter from them before I can do such thing?

Im here in New York, where do I go for fingerprinting and criminal background check, is it in New Mexico? Is it apllicable to a person who has a tourist visa?

Do I have to pass my application form first before I do both things?

2. about transcript

When is the rigth time to request the school registrar to send my transcript to the BON? after or before I pass my application form and fee, etc. to the BON? I'm confused

Is it the New MExico who will be the one to process my transcript evaluation or I have to apply to an evaluation service by myself, i.e CGFNS CES, IERF.

Thank you

I believe you have to use the finger print forms from the BON but can go to local offices to have them don ie you do not have to live in the same state as BON. These can be done before you send your application but they will not do anything with them until they receive your application and pay fees. Transcripts must come direct from your nursing school, not from yourself and again can be requested before but they will not do anything with them until you have put your application in and paid any fees. Instructions regarding CA and application including finger printing http://www.rn.ca.gov/lic/pdf/exam_app_2004.pdf
