Can Anyone Help Me?

Hi,

I have already posted in the OB/GYN board, but have had no responses as of yet. I was wondering if anyone here might be willing to help me. I am a pre nursing student currently working on a English paper (defining a helicopter parent) I am using examples in defining my topic however I feel like my essay is one example short in the newborn area.....I cannot think of a thing. I was wondering if anyone would share with me the oddest overprotective, over parenting, over hovering you have experienced with new parents. I am not looking for names or any personal info just a crazy situation.

When my son was a newborn I would lay in bed with him as I breastfed him. When he was done I would scootch down just low enough so that my ear was at his mouth level so I could hear him breathing. I was pretty neurotic. I would also write down EVERY diaper change in detail for the first couple months. When he went down for the evening I would check on him, literally, every 5-10 minutes until I went to sleep, to make sure he was breathing.

Over hovering???? Parents at my kids soccer game getting angry when kids are playing the ball and they get elbowed. It's soccer. It IS a contact sport. And when their dramatic child collapses to the ground they go flying onto the field, scoop them up and run off with them. Two minutes later kids eating chips on the sideline. Really?

Crazy? I've raise my child to believe that is she's not hurting she's not working hard enough. (Granted she eats, breathes and lives to play soccer. Her motivational lyrics are

10% luck

20% skill

15% concentrated power of will

5% pleasure

50% pain

100% reason to remember my name)...I guess that's crazy to some, she does wind sprints up and down the local hills. BTW- she's 10

Itsnowornever--thanks anyways though! :) and I definitely know what you mean about the kid screaming one minute and playing on the side lines the next...I have seen it a thousand times...

The problem is that we are supposed to be helicopter parents with newborns. I'm accused of helicoptering with my 12 year old but I'm no where near as crazy as I was when he was little. I don't remember any specific stories, I'm sorry.

Absolutely but I'm looking for helicopter parenting to the neurotic point

I don't think that the 'helicopter' parent description is appropriate for newborns. That is normal, healthy parenting behavior for these tiny new humans who are at their most vulnerable point in their lives. I have seen new parents become obsessive based upon misunderstanding or misinformation from health care professionals.... such as extreme attention to sterility, keeping baby too wrapped up/swaddled for warmth or trying to maintain absolute silence so that the baby can sleep ... but these are easily modified with some clarification and coaching.

Yeah, I am thinking helicopter parenting really can't be done until the kid is mobile...

Your child wearing only the clothes you buy for them well into their adult age=helicopter lol.

Your child moving in with you when they majored in philosophy and cant afford to live alone=helicopter.

Just joking...But seriously it is.
