2014 camp work thread

Hi all, I just signed my 2014 contract, negotiations went very well., I will be returning to Camp Indian Head for my fourth season. IHC is a residential camp, of about 600 campers and staff. It is located in northeastern PA, with a 7 week season. We have no special needs that would not be found in a normal school population. I thought I would start another work thread. So please feel free to post anything about getting or having a camp job in 2014. As always I hope to increase communication across what seems to be a very isolated field. If you don't feel comfortable posting the name of your camp, please post any details you feel able to share.

I hope to be returning to Camp Vacamas in West Milford, NJ. This will be my 6 th year, I started as an Lpn and now I'm an R.N. Now I just volunteer a few days a week for my childrens tuition. I have a full time job, but my children enjoy returning every summer. They usually need nurses, so I can guess they can be Google for any one looking for a job.

I don't like to let people go in blind. We have had some nurses pop when they get to camp and figure out its not all bandaids and tummy aches.

Yes I think that's just camp nursing. We have had nurses who want it to run like a doctors office, that is not the case. We take the good and the bad and try to have a great summer. I love camp nursing though

Yep on 191 before Equinunk. If you go back I would love to meet in town, or tour camps. I have heard a lot about Towanda, but I haven't seen it except in the movies ;)

Big Al came out to meet up w me at Chestnut Lake a few summers ago. It was a lot of fun to meet an Allnurses peep in person. Someday I have to get up to Indian Head for a tour! Now I'm in Milford, at Camp Netimus, so it's a bit farther away from Honesdale.

I'm hoping to go back to Camp Anna Behrens and Camp Sakakawea, both Girl Scout camps operated by Girl Scouts of Michigan Shore to Shore. 2-3 weeks training, 6 weeks at Anna B., and 3 weeks at Saki. Camp Anna Behrens is where I went to camp as a kid--it's my first home (I was gonna say second home, but I like camp better than any other place I've lived). It'll be my 6th season as camp nurse but only my 3rd consecutive season. I sometimes go off and get a "real job" but I always come back.

Oh how I wish wish wish my childhood Girl Scout camps - Camp Near Wilderness and camp Yaiewano - were still in operation. :( I loved being a camp nurse this past summer at a different non-girl-scout camp, but I'd also love the chance to be at one of my old camps.

We sure are a mighty small club! I like it! I am one of the very few full time camp nurses, I think. I doubt that there are more than 25 or 30 of us nation-wide. As it is, I have the luxury of getting ready for camp now. Applications are rolling in, MARs are being prepared, I'm busy beating up vendors, etc. My goal is always to have my nurses come in, get oriented, and sit down for check-in, with all of their paperwork done, apartments sparkling clean, health center stocked and ready.

I'm thinking about doing camp nursing for a week or two over the summer. Camp is a 3 week session and a 5.5 week session, but they take nurses for shorter periods of time as available. The camp is located in Western North Carolina. Any idea what typical salary is for 1 week of camp nursing (mostly just curious, that's not a make or break factor)?

In general the salary for a camp nurse is between $50-$100 per day worked. This varies by region of course but up in the north PA south NY region that's what I found.
