Hello! I can't find any LA Sheriff's Dept. nurses on here so I am starting a new thread. I am waiting for my background check to clear, then will work amongst you! What do you like about your job? What don't you like? What are the facilities like? I have many questions about what to expect. Feel free to post about anything r/t LA County Jail Nursing. I have 3-6 months to read your posts!

Hi nurselindah.

The position opened on Sept. 23 or 24th and I applied on the 24th. I first was scheduled a test which took place in October, which enabled me to get an interview which will count 100 percent toward becoming eligible. It doesn't sound like you went through that process. If you did, then what was you interview results and when did they notify you of an opening. Thanks!

Yes Tom, I went through the same process. i applied in late September, was scheduled for the test and took it in November. Received my letter that I passed and was scheduled for an interview a few weeks later. I interviewed and received another letter with my total score and band on it. I received a call a week or so later that there was a position open, was offered the position, so I accepted. A few more weeks passed until I received the background check application packet. Had then schedule another appointment for the background check interview, which I have already done. They told me it will take 3-6 months for the background to clear, and if I pass AND there is still a position open-I will have the job. I was told they pretty much call in band position, which you should already know if you got your letter.

First, congratulations on getting called so soon. You must have scored very high on you interview. I scored high too, but haven't received a call. I took the test on the first day it was offered and had an interview two or so weeks later. I then receive a letter saying that I was in band 1 and would be on the eligible list. As far as I know the only way I could have scored higher was if I was a veteran, but I am not. Do you remember what time your interview was? morning or afternoon? And were you in band 1 or band V? Thanks and good luck on the background check. You should do fine!

Oh, I forgot to ask..where is the position offered? Downtown L.A. or one of the other locales? Also, did they say why the background check takes so long, it seems that as RNs we've already been through the background scrutiny. We had backgrounds just to get into school and then fingerprinted etc. Oh and my oral interview was Nov. 3 at 10:15, they took two of us at a time (different interviewers in another room) and my nurses were very nice and the interview was pleasant. Anyway, I hope to get a call too... I too am a new grad and it seems that there isn't alot out there for new grads right now....very discouraging!

I remembered my interview was on November 4 at 8:00. I felt like I failed the interview so I was surprised when I scored in Band I. A friend of mine had her interview at 1:00 that day and scored in band II. She didn't get called. The first six months you have to take any position, anywhere, any shift. Then, if there is an opening, you can request a transfer. That's about all I know. The background check goes back to the age of 15 and you have to account for EVERYTHING. I may not pass it!

Thanks for letting me know. I scored in Band 1 too but haven't received a call. I live in Orange County and maybe they aren't calling me until a position is open in L.A. rather than say Lancaster. You must have applied the first day applications were sent out, because I think that's the order they go by first and then by the band your in. I answered all the questions in the interview correctly and they haven't called me yet. :( Unless you did something criminal, your background check shouldn't prevent you from being hired! Your an RN now and have already passed the backgrounds to get to this point. Did they call you or send a letter? I keep looking at my mailbox for some contact from them. There is an all womens jail which they probably won't call me for that. Your experience has to be a plus! Hope to work along side you! :)

The background check is brutal-asking questions like have you ever drank alcohol then drove a car, ever tried drugs, list all tickets you have ever received, have you ever been fired, have you ever killed anyone (seriously) etc. Then they send letters to all your previous employers, landlords, friends, co-workers to verify. You may even have to take a polygraph test. Sheesh-it's nuts. THAT is why it takes so long. Hope to work with you too! Keep us posted with updates. (They will call you for the position and the background check).

Thanks for the encouragement. I still haven't heard anything, but hopefully I can go through that crazy process too! :)
