Welcome! I am the Moderator of the new CNA - Nursing Assistant Forum. I am also an RN who works in various health care settings. I have experience in Long Term Care, Home Health, and Hospital settings. I have been a Nurse since 1998 starting out as an ADN; I received my BSN in 2001.
I wish I had been a CNA prior to Nursing School; I know it would have helped tremendously. The jitters I encountered make me blush now. I remember not wanting to look at a wound for a new patient because I was "uncomfortable" lifting the covers and envading someones privacy! It is safe to say, "those days are over ;)"!

Yeah! A board for CNA's (or as they are called here-LNA's). I did this work 20 yrs ago, but got burned out, then family came along etc. I just finished my course this past weekend and am sitting for my state boards on Thursday! Can't wait to get back working. Plan on doing LTC for awhile while I get my BLS course and a few other things under my belt. Would really like to work in a hospital setting. Great to meet you all!

Hi! My name is Hope and I am a newly licensed CNA in Florida. I have completed my prereqs for my RN program, have applied and expect to begin in January 2007. I am currently applying at local hospitals for a CNA position (generally seem to be called Patient Support Techs in hospitals in this area) and am looking forward to beginning my career (late start LOL) in healthcare. I am hoping that by working in a hospital setting as a CNA I will be able to learn from those around me and will be that much better when I do earn my RN. You will have a great advantage because of your CNA background. LPN school is hard, but, really rewarding. If you have a good mind set, good priorities and study habits you will do fine. Keep your head up ! You can do it.
I have been a CNA for over a year now, and it has been quite a ride. There are many things that I experienced that I was never taught in CNA classes! I'm looking forward to the discussions in this forum.
We have all have had experiences that we were not discussed in nursing school. Healthcare is a very rewarding field to be in.. Good luck to you!
I am a resident assisitant for a whole 3 days now. I am taking my CNA class a month from now. That will get me a whole $0.25 more in pay once I am done and certified. I am not sure if I like my job or not. It has only been 3 days, so I have time to figure it out. I am excited that there is a CNA forum on allnurses. Thanks Admin!

I am sorry that you have doubts thus far. I know how overwhelming it can be. You will feel more comfortable as time passes and you get more experience. It is a hard career, but well worth it. Good Luck to you!
Hello, Im LPN student that just recevied my CNA May 31st after my first quarter of school, and just started using my certificate July 28th. I find it easier going through school and clinicals now that I am working as a CNA. It seems like now that I am working as an Aide, class is alot easier and everything is coming together alot clearer as well. So it really does pay off to work your way up the ladder. I will be graduating LPN school in March of 2007 and will work as an LPN for 6 months to a year and will go back to school to get my RN (Associates first, BS, and then Masters)- I automately want to end up being a Physicians Assistant before its all said and done. While being and RN I would also love to be a traveling Nurse, but I have kids and it would make it quite hard. So HATS off to all the new and existing CNA's, keep up the very hard work you are appreciated!

My mother in law is a long time retired RN...when she describes what she used to do with patients on a med/surg floor, I find myself thinking, well that's what CNA's do NOW. Thank you for giving good patient care!

It is good to know that there are RNs out there who do appreciate their aides. Like in any field, there are those that are good and those that are bad. In the past, my best experience has been with RNs who aren't afraid to jump in and give a hand when it is needed. Those are the best RNs.
Hi evrybody! I am a new CNA. Also I am an immigrant who live here only for 3 years. Honestly too many difficalties face a person like me and difficalty with language is the bigest. However. I am so happy to meet friends from this site and I hope You will be friendly with me. I am almost done with my pre-clinical in college, but I decided to do my firs step in this field as CNA, because I need to develop my language. I greet all of you and gladly will participate in different disscusions.
To all those who are beginning their Nursing career as a CNA, God will bless you each step of the way.
I also began as a CNA and was eternaly grateful for that, for I quickly learned that the CNA can be the eyes and ears of the Nurse whom they work with.
Notice that I said with and not for.
You most often know the patient far better than the Nurse, for you are the one who spends the most time with him or her.
Thank God for that for you all can be such a blessing to all the staff in your knowledge.
I say knowledge, for you certainly have that.
Let no man put asunder the good CNA,who truly cares about the patient.
In becoming a Nurse you will appreciate just how long and hard a good CNA works and have compassion for them and learn to Actively Listen to what they have to say. Be a partner and not a desk Nurse.

Hi, I'm starting CNA school next week (Nightingale Nursing-Pleasant Hill CA), and I'm hoping that after I finish, I can get a job in a hospital. I've just finished the pre-reqs for the local 2-yr RN programs, and am applying for the Spring-07 term. I'm hoping that being a CNA will help me get into nursing school, give me a better perspective for when I become an RN, and allow me to earn some income while in school.
