Call in issues HELP

So I'm going to try to make this short as possible. I've been a charge nurse at my current job at a LTC facility for almost two years. It was my first job after nursing school and I I've been there ever since. With that being said I am a very dependable person and in fact I always would work over, doubles and come in early when needed. Our call in policy is standard policy call in must be made within two hours of your shift.

I've called in 3 times since working there once for an unexpected death of an immediate relative and the other two for being sick with a doctors excuse and I always gave at least a 8 hour notice or more so they would have plenty of time to get coverage you know because I actually care about my co workers!

But now I'm fed up and im tired of feeling like I been ran over I made a wrong move with my back the other day and been trying to work through it but today after leaving work I decided that I need to take a day to really get it looked at. But I'm told, " well i understand you're in pain but understand that we are in a bind and if I can't find anyone to work for you then I am going to expect for you to come in to work tonight!

Like really I was so pissed I was left speechless all I could do was cry and wish that I can just quit on the spot. But unfortunately I have to work and need my job and I'm a sucker for allowing myself to be subjected to this type of treatment.

I mean All nurses is this even okay? What if I say no I'm not coming and bring up the policy and thats it?

For your protection, and the facilities protection whether the know it or not, anytime you are injured or even suspect you might be injured related to your job you need to report it and seek medical attention ASAP. Most facilities will have an SOP for this and a preferred medical provider.

If you need to call out you need to call out. Unless you are an exempt salaried employee there should be no elevated level of expectation for you. Especially if you are within your SOP and have the allotted sick-time available.

Nursing is more dangerous than underground mining and heavy construction combined...do not inflict a career limiting injury on yourself at your first job.

You are not a sucker. You just have very high work ethics, work standards, which is admirable and your employer is lucky to have you! Since your employer does not seem to care about you or your health it is time to look for another job.

With very few exceptions all employers must offer workman's compensation for employees injured on the job. Did you hurt your back at work? You must file a claim and it is almost never too late. Even a few days after a mild back strain on the job, that you thought would go away, but still hurts you can, must, should, file a claim. I repeat this is a nation wide law that has few exceptions!

Sound like my job. I am new but as long as have been there, the ones who rarely call out like you, get the hard time when they do call out for good reasons. But we have nurses and cna who are known to call out frequently and last minute and no one say anything to them

A call in to work is a statement, not a discussion. If you call in and apologize or justify your decision, you open the door to a discussion. Best to know your final answer and notify them, then disconnect. Don't even give them a reason, say you'd be happy to bring in a doctors note if they need one.

The bold part, there is no such thing. They can not deny your calling off. Remember, when you call off, you are informing them you are not coming in, not asking for permission. Big difference.

Also, this is a bit of a bait and switch. See, they have been informed of the back problem by you and tell you come in anyway. If you go in after reporting this to them, most likely they are going to take it as.............your complaint was fabricated and you are fine. Not the impression you want to give.

You need to be seen and get documentation of the problem.

Thank you all for your advice, I believe its time for me to move along, I've been unhappy there for a while now. My anniversary date is in October I haven't taken my vacation yet which I planned on doing so next month and I have a little over 40 hours of sick time available. I'm going to take time this weekend and seriously go on the search, its time for me to stop making excuses for me to stay there and be happy again!
