Greetings.
This is my story- I graduated from Nursing School in May 2008 (ADN) and passed my boards in October 2008.
I live north of San Fran and have yet to find a New Grad Program. I've been on Allnurses since last summer when I started studying to pass the boards. I used Allnurses especially the "random facts" thread which helped me pass the boards with flying colors. My family is ready to move out of the area because there is no new grad program avail out here.
I have spent hours online looking for New Grad positions in Washington State, Southern Ca, New Mexico, and Ashville NC. These are the areas, along with the Bay Area that I am interested in. I am looking to see if someone would like to buddy up or we can all help continue this thread and we can help search together for all the possible positions in the areas mentioned above or just in California. I have found that the work done alone is not enough or that I have just missed an application date, or I didn't know that blank blank just hired for the season.
The random facts thread was so hot because it was encompassing info about one main event with up to the minute info. Maybe a thread like "California's 2009 New Grad RN Program- Who's hiring right now?"- and it would include SNF's and whatever we can think of that a new nurse can do in the community, would be like the "random facts" thread. I'm sure I will hear from an Allnurses thread monitor about if this is OK or not.
At this point I am just trying to be creative and use the best resource online, which to me has been this sight.
I hope to hear from you soon.

I have been working at SNF in for almost a year and I do make $35/hr but I feel like I haven't fulfilled what I went to school for. I have a Bachlor's Degree and still can't find a job in a hospital. Does anyone know if this counts as experience? If not does anyone know if there any new grad programs in Walnut Creek, Antioch, and Pittsburg area.
For hospital experience, it does not count. You will be considered a new grad when you app with no experiance.
Hey there,Congrats on the job:cheers:
I have applied for all 4 of the recent new grad jobs at UCDavis and just talked to the recruiting office. Very nice, btw. Anyway, I was just wondering what you could tell me about their hiring process; interviews etcetc. I graduated in May and have had only 1 screening interview and they wanted only new grads that lived within 30 miles of the hospital; I live further away, interesting screening tool:smackingf.
Thanks for anything you could offer. Good luck
If you did not precept there, work for free, your chances are virtually 0! There is a better chance that the antartic melts before you will get a job there.
I got a job with Mollen too, but haven't heard anything about the online training yet. I called & they said they were working on getting it up, but still nada. Have you heard anything?

"I actually have two; 1 is a temp. job with mollen immunizations and the other one is a fulltime job at a med/surg dept."

If I'm correct, you posted getting in a hospital as a volunteer and had taken your ACLS/PALS? I've been thinking of you and hoped something like this happened to you! great critical thinking girl! he he I got a job too! not with a pay as great as yours, but I have a job! :) Thank my heavenly father!!!!!!!!!!! I actually have two; 1 is a temp. job with mollen immunizations and the other one is a fulltime job at a med/surg dept. I had been applying since April with zero feedback, nada! I feel everyones pain and know it's not easy terrain out there. I hope this gets easier soon. I just emailed the heart association, I'm trying to get all the ACLS/PALS reading done via online and get skills done at the local fire dept., who knows? But I'll get it done! Another thing that's in my head is getting my forensic licensure completed online through UCR and my SANE license...how cool is that!?
it's expensive, but I have to do it to broaden my career...I can always make small payments...
Congrats on your new job break! Enjoy it and may you have many more positive adventures!

I have to disagree with this about UCDMC. I am currently in orientation as a New Grad, and I did NOT precept there. I'd never stepped foot in the building prior to my interview. I will say however that at least one of the other 4 New Grad's in orientation with me did do her preceptorship there.
All I can say is keep trying!

hi heatherp,
what was the interview process like for UCD? did u just interview with the nurse manager or were there more ppl?

How is orientation at UCD? What unit are you on? The nurse manager just called me yesterday to schedule me for an interview and I'm slightly freaking out because it's been so long since my last interview and school that I'm actually studying for it, lol.
I live in SoCal so I was really surprised I got a call for an interview because of the comments here about not having preceptored at their facility. The position I applied for was the Cardiothoracic PCU and I did my preceptorship in a cardiovascular unit and a PCU, so I guess it was relevant to that unit.
So I browsed through the net during my job search and I ran into this blog..and HAD to become a member. I FEEL THE PAIN!! I moved to San Jose this summer, I graduated this June from an ADN program in Southern California, I have passed my boards and as excited as I am to be an RN I am more excited to WORK! I did the bridge program, worked as an LVN for three years. I really thought that this would be and advantage when applying to work, but NO LUCK! I have applied to many positions from San Jose to San Francisco, not one call back since July10th only some sad denials via email. My goal is to start in a med surg unit where I gain some expereince and ultimatly work in the ICU. Although its a sad situation im kinda content that im not alone. I am here to beg the same question "Who's hiring right now?"

I think every unit is different. For the NICU they said it was going to be a panel interview, but then it ended up being just the assistant nurse manager, and the unit manager at the end (she was going to be there the whole time, but got called away for a meeting).
I applied in June, 3 or 4 weeks later they called on Friday to set up the interview. I interviewed on Wednesday, and just about 3 weeks later I got the call with the job offer. It took a LONG time, but SOOO worth it!
GOOD LUCK!!!

I am wondering if one has an IP (interim permit) doesn't that make the person a new grad and one without experience?
So, what is this job description? Degree in Nursing. California RN licence or interim permit to practice Registered Nursing. Certification in Basic Life Support. Advanced Cardiac Life support preferred. Critical Care Class Certification Required. At least one year in an medical-surgical, critical care, or emergency room nursing. Excellent communication, written, and customer service skills. Competency in use of pacemakers, defibrillator, cardiovascular medications, and oxygen equipment. Computer knowledge helpful.
Maybe it is worth a shot to just apply...
