West Coast University spring 2019

U.S.A. California

Hey guys!

i just got accepted into West Coast University in Orange County. I'm super anxious/excited about starting the program and I was even more in shock to find out that with all the classes I'm transferring I'll only end up with about $40,000 in loans for my BSN degree. I'm really impressed with their NCLEX pass rates (93%) and I'm also glad they are WASC, CCNE, and CBN accredited.

Im going to be moving from Northern California (Sacramento) for this program and I was wondering if there's anyone (female) that would need a roommate? I don't want to live on my own because the cost of living can be super pricey in Orange County and I won't be working.

Another question I have is how good are the professors? I have a 3.8 overall GPA with A's in most of my sciences but I've alwayd had to study hard. I expect nursing to be the hardest thing I'll ever had to study but I think it all begins with a great professor..

any words of advice from WCU graduates or current students?

I live in California and have been trying to get into a nursing program for two years. Most here are admitted based on lottery so either you are the luck of the draw or you wait who knows how long. I have a family and i don't have anymore time to waste. West coast is in fact accredited. It may be a guaranteed spot for acceptance but that doesn't mean you are paying for a degree. You still have to put in the work. I know many past graduates who have had no trouble finding a job. Maybe where you are they may laugh at west coast graduates but not here. West coast also has a 93 percent pass rate for the nclex on the first attempt. Yes it is a for-profit school with high tuition. I was fortune enough to qualify for a scholarship through them and for grants. So i will finish with no more debt than if i attended a regular university. You are entitled to your opinion but i thought I would inform you as to why people choose this school and that not everyone will be drowning in debt or laughed at when seeking employment.

Hi :)

I was really interested in going WCU but my understanding was 8semester for $136,240 which is not included GE course,,, am I wrong?

Because simply 1credit for $1890 and 120credit will be over $200,000 so this $136,240 is only for nursing core.

No the 136k would be the whole cost of the program including your GE courses. But most people transfer in classes to cut down the cost and time. It would be best to take your GE courses at a community college and then start the program there. They can give you a list of courses that transfer. If you complete all GE courses you will be there for 5 1/2 semesters instead of the full 8

Thank you for letting me know I think I'm applying next fall in Ontario:)

Your welcome if you have any other questions i will be glad to answer them.

I don't appreciate you verbally attacking me or the program. I have worked VERY hard to get where I am. I was valedictorian of my medical assisting program, a tutor, and mentor. I work full time and have managed to get almost straight A's in my nursing pre requisites, so don't think you're the only one that works hard :) You said in your post that you go to a school in the middle of nowhere? So how competitive was your program? Maybe you didn't have to put in the "hard work" and go the "actual acceptance" route you were talking about. In my experience, schools that are in the middle of no where and that are liberal arts are not as competitive for nursing or any major at that.

I have actually chosen to go a different route through a lottery system and that's only because I have to stay local right now because of personal reasons and I have the stats to do so, 3.89 GPA and very high TEAS and HESI scores.

You don't need to bash WCU or anyone who wants to/or is currently attending this school.

However just so you know, WCU is FULLY accredited. It's acredidted by WASC and CCNE. I've had many family members and friends go through this school and they have said nothing but wonderful things about the program. They are all employed at either Kaiser, Sutter, UCDMC, UCLA, Hopkins or at private practice. My mom is also a charge nurse at Kaiser and they LOVE WCU graduates. They love how smart and knowledgeable they come out of the program, the pucuality, the experience from clinal sites, and how they were taught in SMALL personable environments.Next time you comment something negative, make sure you know your facts!!

Hi!

So what really cut down the cost was taking all my pre requisites at a community college before transferring. At WCU the cost goes by semester, and I believe its around 17,000 a semester to go there. a semester contains 2 quarters and the first 6 quarters are all pre requisite classes you can take outside of WCU so if you take them before hand you will save around $35,000. Another thing was my FASFA, I get full cal grant and pel grant which awarded me $9500 a year and since I have to go there for 2 years it gave me another $19,000 towards tuition. Last but not least was my HESI score and GPA. The university offers scholarships sometimes for selected amount of students depending on academic standing personally, mine was $20,000 scholarship per year as long as I keep my GPA good. My HESI score was a 85% and my GPA is a 3.88.

Price tag on school: $136,000

pre requisite courses: -$35,000

FASFA & grants: - $19,000

WCU scholarship: -$20,000 per year = 40,000 total scholarship

total tuition= $42,000.

I hope this helps :) talk to your advisor and try to find the most affordable way possible. From what I have heard this school is worth every penny.

Hi Powell.E

How did you get a 20k scholarship from them? I was in the process of signing up for the school and all my prereqs transferred except I need statistics, I asked about scholarship information and they gave me the way to access through the portal but when I asked about the scholarships they offer to first year students I was told I needed to apply for loans first and if I were not able to come up with the rest of the funding then they would submit my name for approval for a school grant through WCU.

i also received a scholarship from them. Its a point system based on need gpa and hesi/teas score. Your need would be how much money you still owe after federal loans grants etc. So depending on your point score determines how much money you will receive. And to maintain the scholarship amount you have to keep your GPA above a 3.0.

When you got the scholarship, didn't you need to fill out your student loan part to see how much you qualify and if you didn't then you would get the scholarship? for me, they didn't let me get the scholarship base on my gpa or hesi/teas score. they told me that i needed to be rejected from student loans or private loans first in order to be consider. can you help me how you got the scholarships from them?

Same here that's what I was told too from the financial aid advisor and when I asked again about the scholarship and seeing it on the site that it's offered to first time students she was hesitant and said I needed to be rejected on student loans to qualify for that scholarship and it's not offered to everyone they will submit my info and then it would be decided on by the committee.

Yes first you need to be rejected for private loans and you need to give them proof of the denials. Then they will give you the application for the scholarship. The point system is attached to the scholarship application. Once you submit it the committee will review it and decide if you get the scholarship. The amount will vary based on your point ranking.

did you get rejected by private loans or did you ask someone else and they got rejected? they told me i needed to get rejected two times or more to qualified for the scholarship
