California nurses - happier?

Ok, before I get flamed for posting such a statement - I'm only asking because, as a Californian who is thinking of becoming a nurse, the nurses that I've spoken to here seem to be happy in their career choice. But on these boards, my goodness, you'd think it was the worst profession around. SO... do you think Californian nurses are given more respect, paid better, given more flexibility -- any combination of the three????

I know exactly what you mean. The nurses I've talked to personally are very happy in their jobs. But a lot of people do seem to be pretty miserable on this board.

I have no clue if it's a California thing or not, but it's an interesting theory. Maybe it has something to do with the California Nurses Association, which has done so much for nurses in this state, like the ratio law. I don't think other states have a strong union like we do and, even if all California nurses aren't union, they still benefit from CNA's efforts. Maybe that's the reason, I dunno.

A lot of nurses here in Texas are contemplating of working in California. Are they really happy there?

Well I am not YET a nurse in california, but have a feeling I will be happy come december.

Starting RN salary with full benefits in a hospital where you can start wherever you want (ER,ICU,OB,OR, whatever) is $25.36/hr.

After 6 months probation it goes up to either $29-32 depending on how the negotiations go (union).

Money isn't everything. Benefits look great, plus the work environment is awesome (I am a nurse's aide type worker now). Very up to date w/the equipment, and the nurse-patient ratio is great.

A lot of people complain about how nurses do not get paid enough. I don't get it. Maybe because I am 21, without children/husband, and work in a good state? Or maybe it's because I haven't yet worked as an RN:)
