California NP Furnishing Number

I am wondering if someone could help me here. I was just on hold with BON for 2hrs and got no where!

I to advanced pharmacology in 6years ago but have only been a NP for 3years. Does that mean I have to take Advance Pharm again? If yes any recommendations on where I can take it?

Thank you so much for anyone that is able to help with this question...I am going crazy trying to find the answer.

You are not very clear in your question.  You apply for your California RN and NP licenses at the same time.  You need to take a short online course (less than 1 hour) to apply for your NPI.  CANP offers this for free.  You do not have to retake Advanced Pharm if you are already an NP

I think the question is an endorsement situation... the OP took the Advanced Pharm six course years ago...California requires that the applicant completed this course within the last 5 years. If the applicant took the course more than 5 years go, he/she must show that they have 5 years of employment as a Nurse Practitioner including prescribing as part of the role.

Note to people endorsing to CA: maybe make sure you have 5 years NP experience outside of CA if your Advanced Pharm course is over 5 years ago.  California has a lot of rules that doesn't make a lot of sense but I'm not sure they will accommodate individual situations like this.  Retaking the Pharm course is of course an option...they are available even online in some universities.

Yes that is what I am trying to ask. I spoke to BON and they said explain your situation that you have been a NP for 3years (not sure what there is to explain here). I didn't trust this answer and after MUCH digging I found this on BON website: https://www.RN.ca.gov/pdfs/regulations/npr-b-45.pdf

It says: "A forty- five hour (45) continuing education (CE) course. The course must include a written test of knowledge to demonstrate comprehension of the course objectives"

I found a 45hr online advance pharm course, it even says on the website that: "This course is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing for initial furnishing requirements, as well as continuing education" It isn't as expensive/time consuming as taking a whole Advance pharm course over again. I plan doing the course and then applying for my furnishing number JUST to be on the safe side. I am not sure this is required.

I hope this helps anyone with similar situation as me...I spend hours looking for this answer but couldn't find anything anywhere! And I don't trust the person answer my questions when I called BON (was on hold for 1.5hrs!)

@ms5547 that course should suffice but also call Barkley and Associates to make sure. That company was started by Thomas Barkley an NP who became faculty at CSU Los Angeles. They would know what CA requires.

Did they end up accepting this course? I took advanced pharm at . I have a feeling that may not meet California requirements. I'm thinking I'll go ahead and take this course. If they respond that I need to retake pharm, I can send them this completed course.

I found that BON responds to emails, so try emailing them

Thanks. I have. Waiting on a response.

Hello! I am also applying for endorsement in California. I took pharm over 5 years ago and have been in practice as an NP for only 3 years. Did you end up needing to take the 45 credit pharm course to get your furnishing license? I can't believe how crazy and expensive the requirements are to get a license in this state!

Thank you,

Tana

Hi Tana

My course was expired just like yours and I had to retake advance pharmacology. Fortunately the website I put earlier in the thread....they accepted it. It will take probably take you a day or two to do it. Good refresher is a way to look at it.....but yah it was ridiculous getting all my licensing in CA

Thank you so much for getting back to me! I'll do the course and use my CME money that I have through my current job ??

I took a course through Fitzgerald that met all the requirements that they list but they denied it, saying it had to be an advanced pharmacology course through a college or university NP Program. I cannot find such a course that I can take without be admitted to their program and online. I have lost hours and money on this issue and cannot solve it. I have even asked my congressman for help! I just can't work, which is devastating.
