california lvn pay scale

U.S.A. California

Could someone give me some insight into the average pay scale for LVNs in Sacramento? I have had two job interviews and the pay seems SO low. Per Diem is high of course, but I was looking for full time. With the cost of Daycare, why work if my whole check will just pay for daycare? If I could know what some of the others in the LVN field are getting perhaps I can have more fuel in the interviews. Thanks

You can go to the www.spb.ca.gov and take that state exam. They will send you a letter. I did that about 4 months ago and I finally got a letter from them about a position at Chino facility.

Lucid gave me alot of info as I never worked in a prison before. I am going to apply and see if they hire me.

You should try too:) I think they are always looking for nurses as not many people want to work in a state prison. Thats why they pay the nurses so much.

Hi Tracy! I work for Solvere (medical contract agency) through the CA Dept of Correcctions...Here's the number and who you speak to: 1.800.451.7811/ Christy Silverman, Nurse Recruiter. They have contracts with multiple prisons throughout the state as well as other types of medical facilities. Give it a try! I'm glad I did!...Plus if you want a great chance to become a state nurse, get experience through the agency (that what the prisons want....Experience)....Best of Luck...Jules (Lucid):lol2:

I don't have much experience I have had my license since March working since May, but I'm a nurse consultant right now and I do not have much hands on experience. MY job is much like a school nurse, but with adults with disabilities. I basically monitor our participants health and safety and then call the homes if I observe somthing, and I do alot of in-services for the staff for care of the clients. Alot of paper work adn research but little hands on stuff. I love my job but feel I should be doing more hands on care. Do you have benefits with the agency?

An LVN is a Licensed Vocational Nurse which is in between a Certified Nursing Assistant and a Registered Nurse. An LVN is a Licensed Nurse and the Scope of Practice varies from state to state and country to country, as well as the facility you work for. We practice under a licensed doctor of some sort ,directly, or under a Registered Nurse. Two states (California and Texas) name us as LVN's. The other 48 states name us as LPN's (Licensed Practical Nurses). In Canada we are named LPN's also, or RPN's (Registered Practical Nurses). In England/Australia we were named SEN's (State Enrolled Nurses). Obviously, not all countries have LVN's, or our equivalent.

As for RN's in California, the pay depends on where you work as well as other factors. However, the hospital I use to work for, IPN's (Inter-Permittent Nurses who are permitted nurses awaiting their NCLEX-RN results) as well as new grad RN's start at $27.00/hour. If a new RN has past acute care experience as a LVN, then the hourly rate is increased. The average RN monthly gross pay is approximately $5000.00/month. A Charge Nurse position pays more. Nurses with years of experience, or with BSN,MSN,DSN or other qualifications (ie: Certified Registered Nurse Anethesist, Nurse Practitioner or Midwife) who are in a supervisory capacity (such as: House Supervisor, Assistant Director/Unit Educator, Director, Vice President of Nursing) pays more, also. The County of Los Angeles, Department of Health Services pays (Inpatient) RN's $4500/month and Charge Nurses $5000/month. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation pays (non pysch) RN's about $7300+/month; a Supervising Registered Nurse II (SRN II) makes about $8500+/month; the SRN III (Director of Nurses) makes around $9000 topping out at about $10,200/month. Other gov't agencies pay differently, also.

I hope that answers your questions. ;)

Dear Lucid Vital Nurse,

Thank you very much for the information.

Specializes in My first yr. as a LVN!.

Most I have seen start $25/hr... Thats SNF mostly.. but there are some dialysis centers Im sure pay a bit higher since additional training is needed ... Ive also seen private hire for DD kids starting $29/hr. It all depends... its a lot of homework!! but never settle ...!

Specializes in My first yr. as a LVN!.

Start for me SNF $25/hr. And even though I have been in health care 5 yr. Im "new" So this is new grad. rate.. but this is also where i did my clinical rounds through school and they were calling me to offer me the job and of course I accepted.. when my 90 days is up Im hoping to exchange benefits (health/dental) for higher pay since I independently have my own health and dental for daughter and I. So Im hoping to increase to 27-28$/hr.
