I read on delphi forums about nurse travelers being ticketed for not registering their personal vehicles in CA (if the traveler drove their own vehicle from their home state) and obtaining CA license plates. To me that seems ludicrous! Is this really true? I am not interested in selling my home or moving permanently from FL. I am wanting to take our van as my family is traveling with and it is quite roomy, and I am certainly not getting new license plates for a three month assignment. Seems to me that CA is not wanting travelers with laws like that.
Any light on this subject is appreciated.

No, you won't need new license plates. I don't know why some were getting ticketed, perhaps they had expired registration or no proof of insurance?

I lived in California for six years - military - and the cops were all too "out of state plate happy" - they tried to get me several times but because I'm a military dependent and my hubby's home state of record was elsewhere, they weren't successful. You don't have to get CA plates unless you are PERMANENTLY moving there to the land of fruits and nuts. Keep your tags registered and up to date in FL, obey the traffic laws and you should be fine.
thank ya'll for replying. i have not had a moving violation in 14yrs, so it will be easy to follow the traffic laws. It is comforting to know then that what i heard was wrong. I went to the CA DMV website and it states that if you accept employment or permenantly move there then you must register your car with DMV in 20 days. It does not specifiy about temporary employment, but I surely thought that was a real stupid thing if you had to get a CA tag for a three month job!
