California DOC - what to wear, what I can/can't take in

Published

I have been hired as a traveler to work at Pelican Bay. I had talked to an officer a year ago who said we could wear our own scrubs. Has that changed? Do I have to wear sneakers or can I wear my Klogs? Do I have to have a clear backpack? What can go in - bottles of pop or water?

I am sure my agency will be getting me this list but need to get some things so am trying to get a jump on it. I did buy some new scrubs - not particular to that job but just needed some, got solid dark colors.

Any help would be appreciated - thank you!

OK, so now the recruiter says that they might not accept my temporary license. What????? I know they used to and sure hope they do now! I was led to believe this was not a problem. Grrrrrrrr.

If you end up going, I would not wear clogs unless you can run fast in them. You'll need to be able to carry emergency equipment and run to "man down" calls within the prison complex. Hope your licensing issue gets worked out.

Don't wear blue (especially navy blue/blue jeans pants,) NO chambray blue (scrub top). No Orange (especially pants/top combination). No gray sweatshirts. No gray pants. No forest green. No white (when it is white pants and white top). No anything that depicts alcohol/tobacco/drugs consumption, or anything that *might* look like its gangster related. No Camouflage.

I don't work at pelican bay, but I work in another CA prison.

Good shoes was an excellent suggestion.

MelodyNelson - the no orange makes sense as I see lots of prisoners wearing that... What is rationale for no blue, no chambray blue, no gray, no forest green (maybe because if used in an escape could be used for camouflage?), no white....

Thanks!
