California Board of Nursing License By Endorsement (Military, Spouse, Veteran)

Hello Folks,

I applied to the CBRN for a license by Endorsement and qualified for the expedited service based on being a military veteran. I had previously asked/searched for information on this topic through other CBRN threads, but was unable to find anyone else who had info on how long it takes to get licensed on average through the expedited service. So, I decided to post my experience in case others in a similar position have questions in the future. Here is my timeline and I will update as I proceed through the process:

17 Jan 2017: Online License by Endorsement application submitted to CBRN. Paid the fee with a credit card online and BreEZe system shows my application as open for a permanent Cali license.

18 Jan 2017: Mailed in some hard copy documents to the CBRN as part of my application to include official sealed transcripts, License ID form, Live Scan completed form (I sent in redundant copies just in case as I uploaded the same forms to my online application).

20 Jan 2017: BreEZe system shows 2 open applications, one for a temporary license (since I applied to both) and the other for the permanent license. Under each application, it shows no outstanding requirements at this time.

That's it for now folks. I will continue to add updates as they come.

Hey there,

Sorry for the delayed response. I am not 100% sure on the timeline for Licensure by examination for veterans. I do know that you rate expedited status for that category as well. If you could please update us on your experience with this separate licensing category for veterans, it would be greatly appreciated, that way others in your shoes have something to go off of.

fj13, So I have some awesome news. The CBRN is pretty good about expediting veterans application. Especially good for me, because I regrettably picked up a DUI 5 years ago. From the time I submitted my application until ATT approval was 2.5 weeks.

There are some things that I did that might have helped. I emailed the Dept. of Consumer Affairs at [email protected], inquiring them how the accelerated process works for veterans. They forwarded my message to the CBRN. The DCA also noted that if I don't hear anything back from the CBRN to send in another email to dca, which I did after waiting for about 1.5 weeks. I carefully made sure that I wasn't pushy to have my application done. Truthfully, I only wanted to know the timeframe. This link explains why I emailed the DCA. Information for Military Personnel and Their Spouses/Domestic Partners - California Department of Consumer Affairs, I am an honorable discharge and it states in that link that we get accelerated app tracks :) I hope that helps.

Thank y'all so much for making this page... I've been wondering about how the expedited review works and haven't been able to find anything for how it works for military spouses-until now! So thank you. I figure I'll contribute to this feed to show my experience as well.

July 7th- mailed in all required documents for licensure by endorsement. Currently have a Texas RN license.

July 21st- check cashed by California BON

July 25th- finally figured out how to work the BreEZe system. My application is currently open/pending with the deficiency "missing education history". I'm hoping that this just means they haven't opened my transcript that my school sent.... I tried to get around the 'send all transcripts from all schools' requirement because during my time at The University of Texas I only took 2 prerequisite classes at other community colleges. One was for history, the other for government. I feel like this shouldn't effect my application because those have nothing to do with nursing requirements. I'm going to follow in the steps of the previous posters and email military@dca just to make sure and see when they estimate my application will be complete.

Hope to update y'all with good news soon :)

In the DCA's response, there will be a sentence that says to contact them if the BRN does not reply within a certain time frame. I gave the BRN 1 week and plus some days. I emailed the DCA back like they instructed and within that day the BRN emailed me.

Thank you for that info!

Just an update.

July 25th I contacted [email protected] to get an estimate of how long it would take to get my license and also to see why I have a "missing education history" deficiency. I got a response the next day from the DCA stating that my concerns have been "forwarded to the Board of Registered Nursing for their review and direct response". Like fresnovet said, I did not get contacted by the BON at all for over a week.

August 2nd I contacted the DCA again notifying them that I still had not been contacted by anyone from the BON about my concerns.

August 3rd Someone from the BON contacted me stating somewhat general information and that they are going to get in touch with my "evaluator" that is "reviewing my file". So hopefully now everything will start speeding up!! To future applicants, definitely utilize the DCA as they help speed up the process and kind of bug the BON for you!

So happy to give y'all my FINAL update!

August 5th: Received another email from a DCA employee, this time it was much more detailed and she ensured me that if the BON needs any more information that she'll let me know.

August 7th: The "missing education history" deficiency was finally gone when I checked my account. The application was still pending.

August 11th:Today I checked my breeze account and I had a CA RN license number!!! I went onto nursys just to verify and it was there too! I have no idea when I'll actually get a hard copy in the mail but that doesn't matter too much to me. I'm just happy to finally have the # so I can start applying to jobs!

I hope this thread can help someone else for the future! Use the DCA, I truly believe they help to further expedite the process. From the time I mailed in all my documents (July 7th) to today, the process took a total of 5 weeks- not too bad! Good luck to y'all!

I am happy to hear that! I just took my nclex test yesterday. I'm waiting the results í ½í¸¬

How long did it take for the CBON to cash your check if you mailed your app in? The wait is excruciating

Thanks for the posts! It is nice to see a timeline for it. I just realized as military spouses we have the option for expediting a license. I wish I had known about this before as I am waiting from California to verify my license to endorse one for Rhode Island.

I appreciate you all for posting this! Curious to what other forms were needed to be expedited? Did you have to send military orders? Or proof your a military spouse or veteran? We are actually serving a tour overseas and I wanted to transfer my texas License over to California but unfortunately they require livescan prints and I must be physically in california

to do this. Also is there a work around for the livescan for military? thank you!

Not sure if you are past this point already since you posted back in late January, but there is no work around for the Live Scan requirement. The only other option is to mail in your hard copy fingerprints form.
