Cal State Northridge CSUN Accelerated BSN Fall 2008

Published

I applied for CSUN's accelrated fall 2008 program and simply wanted to let others know I'm online to bounce ideas around.

It would be great to hear your stories going through the interviewing and acceptance process. Who knows, hopefully we'll even be classmates together this fall...

You might be able to find an upper division Poli Sci class for title V that would also meet the 9 unit upper division GE requirement. I did these a while back so I don't recall which count and which don't. Check on that one with your adviser. Or try calling the Health Sciences office EOP center. They are really good about sorting that all out. Don't tell them anything about the ABSN program or they will just forward you. Just ask them if there is a Poli Sci you can take that will also suffice the upper division GE requirement.

Post 96 was in regards to epidemiology

Thank you softballgirl09 for all the helpful information!

levoila: so, what if the upper division 9 elective units do NOT include title v or epid, will you still lean toward c sun? it seems like incorporating 9 extra units will create quite a hardship on an otherwise tough a-bsn program...

It definitely would make a difference. I need to call on Monday and find out how this would affect me. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Softballgirl, thanks for all of the info!

I wonder if there was any way of getting those extra units waived. It seems silly to make us jump through extra hoops given that we all already have a BA/BS. I need to find out what would satisfy it. I don't think I would want to take all 9 units the last semester, but it seems so lame to have to stay an extra semester beyond the major requirements just to get another bachelor's. We've all satisfied general education requirements and surely have plenty of upper division electives. I wonder if taking another language would count--I would enjoy that. Then again they would probably be at the undergrad level. I guess I'll be looking at the catalog tomorrow.

So, I don't know cshallen. I like the idea of going through UCLA's NP program. Several of the NPs that work in the UCLA Student Health Center graduated from that program and they were great, so maybe it would be worth the hassle.

Good news, everyone!!

On page 19 of the CSUN BSN Student Handbook, the last sentence of the second paragraph under "Second Degree Students" states, "Second degree students in Nursing are not required to take the 9 units of upper division general education courses."

This BSN Student Handbook is for 2008-2009, so unless this particular thing is set to be revised, I'm guessing it still applies. I'm going to call on Monday to double-check. There's a link to a pdf of the handbook on the CSUN Nursing website. I'm having trouble falling asleep, so I started reading it. hahaha--trying to figure out the best path to reach my goals is not an easy task! I hope that I'll know my decision soon--good luck to everyone still trying to figure theirs out.

nevermind :( on page 31 it says that people with a non-CSU degree do have to take the 9 units of upper division GEs--so lame!

pg. 33

4 semesters:

sem 1, 15 units (6 classes)

sem 2, 15 units (4 classes)

sem 3, 16 units (8 classes)

sem 4, 10 units (4 classes)

so ~$8920 in tuition fees

levoila: that is SO lame. So, that means we would have to take 3 extra classes the 4th semester. I am sure it could be done, but that is in addition to epid and the second half of title v -- for me! That seems stressful and maybe not even do-able in only 4 semesters...hmmmm, how does this affect your decision process???????

I'm sure you might have already completed them as a part of your other degree. They are just 3 classes that are considered general ed at the upper division level.

I wish it were that simple, but they are 3 upper div gen ed classes ONLY from a CSU school -- which myself and levoila do not have cause we went to either private or uc schools...

I think the 9 units thing is a typo because no one has had an issue with that. It makes sense that if you are a second degree that you shouldn't need them because you technically already did them. The only thing is the title V. For that you could take Poli Sci 155 and History 150 online or something at a CC or over winter break or in 4th semester and be done with it. If you are starting in fall it would be a good idea to take it over summer break this summer.

leviola: if you had to choose between msmc and csun, which would you ultimately choose?
