I applied for CSUN's accelrated fall 2008 program and simply wanted to let others know I'm online to bounce ideas around.
It would be great to hear your stories going through the interviewing and acceptance process. Who knows, hopefully we'll even be classmates together this fall...
levoila: would it make any difference on your decision process if you had been admitted to csun and msmc BOTH for the summer?
I don't think so. Much as I loved so many things about MSMC--the director of MSMC's program, for example, struck me as being someone who was very frank and sincere--the campus, the flowers, the buildings, the proximity--I can't get over the cost. $47K+ (any increases for this year) +books, gas (I would live at home, so I'd be saving $$--but it wouldn't really matter because I'd be paying so much more to begin with).
I get the feeling now that the forgivable loans aren't a sure thing--don't private loans earn interest from the moment the money is disbursed? I don't think it's worth it. ALso the NCLEX pass rate wasn't even that great--I'm assuming that it's both the traditional BSNs and the A-BSNs, but it made me wonder if it was really all that wonderful in the first place. I think that they might be more supportive (I get the feeling that CSUN is going to be a lot more sink or swim) but I don't want to have lots of debt from this plus my undergrad and eventually grad school.
Maybe if I had the money saved up and I didn't have the undergrad loans...but even then I don't know that it's worth it. You mentioned wanting to apply in 2011 to NP=MSNs--were you planning on applying for the forgivable loan--or are you planning to apply for scholarships/ private loans? What if you couldn't work full-time during your master's program?
CSUN is less expensive without the hassle of having to get private loans. What's important is to become RNs and get experience. The general feeling I've gotten from nurses that I've spoken to is that you learn so much more once you start working.
Hi, everyone!
If any of you received an email last week from the CSUN financial aid office saying that you needed to check out your "to-do" list and then found out that you needed to make changes to your FAFSA, I have a little update. You need to log on to the fafsa website and print out your updated Student Aid Report (SAR) and either mail/ fax/ or drop off this updated version to the CSUN financial aid office. Their fax number is (818) 677-4665.
I also found out today that people whose first semester at CSUN will be this Summer will not recieve financial aid until FALL! I was shocked! Apparently only continuing CSUN students are eligible for Summer financial aid! It would have been helpful if we were given this information during the info session. So, if I end up going to CSUN, I would have to commute. I'm glad I'll have my a/c to console me during the long commute--summers in the valley are HOT!
I called student services advisor number (from the CSUN nursing website) and was transfered to the health sciences office. The person that answered the phone asked me to write an email to ask about the 9-unit requirement, so I'll let everyone know what I find out when I get a reply.
I was also looking at taking the 5 to the 118--I hate the 101 and the 405. Even though early enough the 405 isn't bad. I think I remember the 405 not being bad by around 7:30 pm--but then again I would only really take it from Wilshire to the 10 and back when I was at UCLA. The traffic always seemed bad going over the hill into the valley (I would only do that to go to Costco).
I think I would probably take the 10 to the 5 to the 118. The last time that I went there I took the 101 to the 405 and the traffic was awful.
Maybe if I leave at 6 am and stay in the library until the traffic dies down--am I setting myself up to be miserable??

levoila is right! yikes. thanks for bringing it up.. bc i would have never known.
You send the letter of intent and the change of major in the same envelope they gave you to send back to them.
Also, I emailed them earlier today and got a quick response. I asked if we are going to receive any information before the orientation (financial responsibility, uniforms, books, etc) and they said we should receive a packet by email in the next few weeks. I remember them telling me that on the phone when I was told of my acceptance into the program...but I was so excited I forgot. I was expecting a packet in the mail and when I received a normal size envelope, I thought that was all the info we would receive. So, definitely be patient...we are receiving a packet of all the info by email soon.
leviola: I havent yet, but I will probably do so tomorrow. or maybe I will call admission and records tomorrow to see if I can fax it.
sbalmostthere: The letter included in the envelope with the stmt of intent and change of major form stated not to mail the change of major form with the stmt of intent. the change of major form is supposed to go to admission and records. =X
