CA schools for LVN to RN programs, foreign programs?

Nursing Students LPN-RN

Published

Hi There,

I will be graduating in 1 more month from my LVN program. I plan to take my Nclex soon after I graduate and hopefully pass. Meanwhile, my goal to is start an LVN to RN program immediately. I just don't know how to deal with all the prereqs for the community college bridge programs, not to mention the huge waitlist for these programs. So, my friend told me about this foreign nursing program from a college in the phillipines. You do all your class work here, your job experience as an LVN counts as clinical hours, and for the last month of the program, you go to the Phillipines and finish your maternity clinicals and graduate there. THe program is 18 months long and you receive your BS in Nursing, but it is a foreign program, so what I was told is that you need to submit all your coursework to the Board of registered nursing in CA and it needs to be reviewed, which can take about 4 months. You would be considered a foreign grad. Anybody here about this? If it is will work, then I don't mind being a foreign nurse, I know it will look a bit strange since I am Indian and I was born in CA. I used to work for staffing at Kaiser and they were recruiting foreign nurses from the Phillipines because their courses were equivelant to the courses here in CA and the clinical hours were just as much as what is required for CA.

Also, I checked into the Indiana State University and the rep on the phone told me that it would take approx. 4 years to finish their program!! I didn't even ask about the money part. But this is the only on-line approved program in CA, I went on the CA BRN to find out.

Any thoughts about what I should do, I would like to get all this done ASAP, but not really sure which route to go. I have 4 kids and I am very busy, but my goal is to be an RN and take care of people, but I need to get this done by the end of 2009.

Any advise would greatly help, Thanks. :wink2:

PMFB-RN Thanks,

I called your school at www.swtc.edu and they now have a two year waiting list for even those who have taken all of the prerequisite courses for the RN program.

*** Therer are 16 schools in Wisconsin's technical college system. Every one has an ADN-RN program. I would call every one and specificaly ask about a waiting list for the LPN tp RN.

Are you speaking of the PLT college with the webpage as:

http://www.pltcollege.edu.ph/

Do you have a USA contact number for PLT ?

Where on the BRN website is the letter located for PLT college?

What is the total cost for the program as well as the total amount of the deposit?

Hi Kathy,

Yes this is the one! I have just an email address for the person in the us, her name is Dr. Olay and her email is [email protected]. Deposit is 5K and total price is 28K for a BSN in Nursing, takes about 12-18 months depending on how many prereqs completed. Let me know what you think, One of the previous students that just graduated just received her approval to take the Nclex.

*** Do what I did. Get your Wisconsin LPN license, then spend 2, four month semesters doing the LPN to RN bridge program at one of Wisconsin's 16 community colleges (called technical college here). The school I went to had NO wait list for the LPN to RN program. Here is their web site:

www.swtc.edu

Whole thing cost me about $2800 as a Wisconsin (formerly Ca) resident and took 9 months (2, four month semesters with a month off for Xmas/New Years). I got an ADN from a real state community college, NLN approves and elligable for licensure in every state (had no problem getting my CA license)

Would be WAY cheaper than going to the PI plus you could work while here and cost of living is REALLY cheap. The fastest and cheapest way for an LPN to get an RN license I know of.

Super friendly people but the winters suck.

Hi,

THis sounds good, did you do your prereqs there also? The only issue is I have a family of 6, my hubby works here and I do Real Estate right now while I am in school. Any ideas? can you take some of the nursing classes online?

Thanks Ashasingh,

From what I was told about the PLT program: A Class is held each Saturday for one year in California. After the one year you then go over to the Philippines for one to two month of clinicals. Have you been told different?

As you say above you was told you can use your clinical experience as a lvn and then go to the Philippines for one month to complete the clinicals and then receive your BSN?

Something a bit different but close:

1. 12 months 1 saturday every week in CA (may take upto 18 months if you have not completed prereqs for Bachelors degree)

2. Clinical is 1 month, 3 weeks in the hospital and the last week is graduation

3. was told that we need to work as an LVN in a patient care setting and they will look at your job description to verify. Those hours will count as clinical hours. Minimum of 24 hrs each week.

4. Then you receive your degrees from the school and afterward submit your paperwork to the BRN to get approval.

So what do you think?

*** the wisconsin technical college system's adn-rn is designed to be done in two years, though many people take more time that that for various reasons. plenty of people do it in two years though. this means there are no pre-reqs, only co-reqs.

you can take all the classes on line through the technical college system except a&p i & ii, micro, clinical, and skills lab. you can transfer in a&p and micro from any college. look at this list of required classes, the required classes are the same at all 16 technical colleges.

http://www.swtc.edu/gray_map.aspx?id=105431

here is a link that shows all the classes offered online by the technical college system. any class taken at any technical college transfers no questions asked to any other technical college, and since these are fully accredited state community colleges to any other college.

here is the e-mail address of kathy witzig. she is the program coordinator for the nursing program at southwest technical college.

here is a link that lists all the wisconsin technical colleges. those near the big cities milwaukee, madison, green bay etc have the longest waiting lists. i would call each one and specifically ask about lpn to rn. last time i talked to kathy at swtc she told me there was no waiting list at all for the part time program, none for the lpn to rn program and a 1 -2 semester wait for the regular program. that was about a year ago though.

good luck and if i can be of any help please let me know.
