CA RN by Reciprocity Applicant-timelines and is anyone getting a temp license?

Published

I graduated with my BSN out of state in Dec and moved home, passed NCLEX in june and got initial RN for MI (where I graduated). I worked as an EMT and did caregiving jobs before I transferred out of state and never had an issue with getting applications processed or finding a job. I had no freaking idea how ridiculous the process would be nor how long it would take when I decided to come home! In MI I could have worked provisionally while waiting for the app to go through but obviously that would never fly here.

Mailed in CA RN Reciprocity App 7/7 and CA Breeze shows it as being submitted 8/7 (meaning it sat on a desk untouched for a month:sniff:). Everytime I check my status it says the same thing: 'Pending'. Today when I clicked on the 'Details' button, it added a new status 'OPEN'. *** does that mean?

Between being blindsided by how long this process would take and finding out that healthcare jobs are now not as easily obtained as they were before I left, i'm more poor than I was in nursing school! (I didn't think that was possible ). I'm having problems just getting steady caregiving jobs! I even put in a CA CNA Endorsement App (AFTER I PASSED MY NCLEX) because at least then I MIGHT get steady work!

Anyone out there in a similar boat? Advice?

Is anyone getting their temp RN's? How long?

I didn't think CA did temp licenses anymore. Yes, CA has a notoriously long wait right now. Have you made sure that they have EVERYTHING they need? They won't contact you if they don't generally. They'll just sit on it. There was a big delay in all processing earlier this year, though it seems that they've cleared most of the backlog. I would try to call them (which, yes, is difficult) and see if you can get any word on what's going on. When did they cash your check? It's usually 6-8 weeks from the cashed date.

Just a friendly heads up, you may want to change your screen name to something more anonymous. This is a very public forum, and protecting your identity as a nurse is very important.

didn't even consider that cause i mostly read the articles and comments on the forum, thanks for bringing that up just in case i do become more active.

I used a cashier's check, so I have no idea when they cashed it to be honest with you.

Just submitted requests for transcripts from all 5 colleges i went to over the years this past week, but i thought they could issue the temp before they got all the transcripts done as long as the rest of your app checks out? The extra document they require to be filled out by me and the college has to be sent directly to the BON attached to your transcript, and this turned out to be the biggest PAIN IN THE ASS of the entire app.

I was hoping for that temp to come through so I could at least APPLY for jobs

in the past, you were able to get a temp license but at that time you could have done a walk thru and get your temp license the same day or get it in the mail min 7-10 days later. Now the avg wait time is 3-4 months and even if you pay for a temp what you end up getting is the perm.

I think if you look at your status in BreEZe, you can see when they cashed your check. I'm trying to remember. I also haven't had to go the endorsement route, only the new grad route, so I'm only so reliable as a source of info! :)

You might call to make sure they've received all transcripts (like you, I had several). I have classmates who had one random transcript holding up the whole process, even though it had been requested. It's good to check in if possible to make sure they at least have everything they need.
