CA RN on probation. Not finding work

Published

Hello,

My license was originally revoked in June 2020 due to substance use issues. I waited the required 3 years the CA BRN mandated before requesting I be reinstated. I had my hearing in January 2024 and my license was reinstated to a probationary status in March 2024. I expected this outcome and I am okay with it being part of the process.

My struggle is finding prospective employers that are, as my counselor calls them, "mistake friendly." I am aware that dialysis nursing is supposed to be advantageous, but it reimburses so low, that I am holding off on applying with these agencies in the prospects of finding more lucrative work. I have applied to for psychiatric nurse positions, and have not received any correspondence.

My question for anyone willing to reply is as such:

What healthcare organizations, by name, are known to employ nurses on probation in California? Location does not matter to me, as I am willing to relocate to better my situation.

Any assistance or advice is greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Welcome and prayers sent for you in finding employment of which You Will! You got this and it's frustrating coming back into practice to find a job and 6 to 9 months of searching is Not uncommon. Remember this though, you will land a position and when you do, you are set! You are in! Once you are back in, the progression back to your specialty area will be Far easier after one year than it is/was to find that initial job for reentry.

Hello Nurse JD,

I was recently put on probation as well and I havent been able to find any place that can monitor/ supervise. do you know if you company is still hiring. It's been a hard 4 months. thank you

Neopets,

I feel your pain...it's almost been four (4) months of endless applications and rejections or ghostings for myself as well.

Employers don't seem interested in the reason, just don't want to deal with the extra work and hoops to jump through, when they just can wait for someone not on probation, this is what one employer told me.  Frankly, I get it. Showing up to apply in person at San Diego's worst SNF's has not helped me either.
I have been rejected by multiple volunteer entities as well.

If anyone has some golden nuggets for us, I would love to hear them.  Let us Know JD!

Respectfully,

Burtz

I did dialysis while in the program. I can confirm that it doesn't pay well. I have a friend who got a job at a good hospital while on probation though. And a few people I've met through NSG were able to keep their hospital jobs. It's definitely not impossible to get a job while in monitoring. You might have to try something new though. Good luxk!

Hi Erin,

do you know if your dialysis clinic is hiring, I am also on probation and I've been struggling to find a job

I'm not certain a URL link will work if provided. If it works, go here for a list of BRN approved nurse support groups.
https://www.RN.ca.gov/pdfs/intervention/nsglist.pdf

if the link isn't visible or won't work you can do a Google search of "CA BRN Nurse Support Groups list" and a link to the BRNs site should be made available that will take you to the listing. You will have to contact a group facilitator at the contact listed in the listing and proceed from there.

Do you know if you take a vacation during your six consecutive months, do you have to start over? Or does that month doesn't count ?

Since you,ve asked this question several times I'll try to give an answer. When I was in the California program it went like this. Also I was in the alternative to discipline program (Diversion). When you want to travel it's best to stay within the continental US within a hour of a medium to large city. That way you can still call in if necessary and find a collection center. (Do your research before hand so you know for sure there's a test site open 7 days a week. Theoretically you can travel without them even knowing. Now if you are going somewhere where a test site is unlikely you have to request an exemption from testing during the length of your trip. If they grant it your good to go as they only look at test compliance to determin length of sobriety.  It goes without saying that you cannot use any substances during your trip.

I still do not understand how you people are finding work on probation. All I did was fraternize with a patient. One would think I killed someone... No employer of the near 50 interviews I have done in the past 4 months since probation began wants to deal, and I get it,  nurses are a dime a dozen here in California... Chapter 13 is in my future if I cant get a nursing job in the next 6 months. Hard to go from $120k/year to $1200/month Unemployment, with four kids and a mortgage.

-Respectfully
