CA concurrency issue with OB/MS and finding a school

Published

I'm looking for any school in any state that will allow me to retake ob and ms as required by the ca bon. I'm a Philippine BSN graduate / us citizen. Anyone have any leads or connections with any school that will allow me to do this? I'm willing to go out to any state to meet this requirement.

I've contacted most of the CA schools already and I'm either already on the wait list, or the school won't allow us to do medsurg without retaking the entire nursing program since its considered like 15 units. I'm getting really desperate and so I'm willing to go out of state for this if necessary.

My email is [email protected] if anyone would prefer to communicate through email or you can post here. Thanks

Did you ever write to the two other posters here who said they went out of state, took the deficiency courses and one got the ATT, another claimed to have gotten her license in HI and was in the process to getting it endorsed into CA? If so, did they ever get back to you with the school's name?

The person that said she was waiting for the CA BRN to issue the endorsement has not yet replied as to her success. I'm sure these posters do check in at least once a week to look over the forums, so let's hope they report back soon.

My understanding is that before you go and spend all this time and money to go out of state, did you specially get that you're approved from the CA BRN to go out of state, do the deficient courses and get the ATT in CA?

I also thought that the CA BRN wanted these course to be made up in CA? There was talks that they would allow the courses to be taken in the Phils, but recent word is that the CHED is still trying to put together an "approved list of schools". My concern is that will the CA BRN even accept this?

This pre-approval must be in writing only, if verbal, that's no good, the same or next evaluator could claim "sorry, but who told you this"?

I think I left my email in that thread to the person who went out of state but never received a reply from that person. I doubt the person who is endorsing it will be allowed until she makes up her deficient courses.

I spoke with my analyst over the phone and she told me that if the school is in the united states, it will be OK as long as its regionally/state accredited. My OR/DR cases were concurrent with my theory but my analyst explained to me that the main reason we're being declined as international grads is because its hard to take our education at face value because there's been many cases of people submitting fraudulent documents. She said that with US schools, its more credible and easier to look into the nursing programs.

So once I do find a school that would cater to my situation, I would inform my analyst and make sure I get an approval in writing that after I make up the courses in said school, I will be eligible to sit for the nclex

That's a very good idea, as you know never know if one day the CA BRN decides that getting the deficiencies completed outside of the CA borders will no longer be accepted and getting it in writing, be it in a letter format or e-mail reply, you know at least you have some assurances, you'll not be wasting time or money, then get denied again.

Just make sure that you get all the deficiencies completed within the allowed 3 year period from the application date, not from the date of the deficiency notice letter unless the letter specifically says it's three years from that letter. I'm not sure they will grant any extension beyond the 3rd year, so there's no time to waste.

There are some PH posters who have indicated that they were more deficient in other courses, up to 4 total, including the MS-OB, so those in that situation need to move on much quicker.

Good luck!

Thanks. Are u also looking for schools?

Nope, getting a paralegal degree soon and working for a CA law firm now. I still study for the NCLEX-RN with the review books my US educated nursing friends gave me, lol. They all said I'm ready based on the testings they give to me, lol.

Two are Filipinas nurses working in new grad jobs but got their BSN's in CA and hired within 1-8 months at very nice top hospitals. One did her clinicals there and the other had very good references and recommendations.

But for now, I really do love the law profession, despite the nasty remarks they make about lawyers, lol.

Hi! Try Kaplan College in San Diego. We have the same situation and I am currently applying with the college. The program starts in May 2014. Their deadline of application will be this March 12, 2014. They will let you yake the deficiencies: OB and MedSurg Nursing.

Good deal! Do you know the tuition cost? How long is the program? Limited enrollment to international students? Any pre-examinations?

No, need to enroll in their entire nursing program, I ask because one found out later (not this school), it was in "fine print", that upon acceptance, you need to take all the other courses.

Good luck to you!

Maybe others can look in the other CA cities where this school has more locations and offers the deficiencies.

There is no need to take the full program. They will let you take the deficiencies. If you only need the OB and MedSurg classes, it will only take you about 4 months maybe. But some people I know needed Psych classes too. So that might take them til 8 months to finish everything. It will cost you probably around $12-15k for the whole thing. It's not cheap. But after all, not too many schools in the area would allow you to take the deficiencies only. Kaplan requires you to take two entrance exams, namely the SLE and KTP tests. They only have limited seats for people with the same situation needing only to go back to school for the deficiencies. So it's pretty tight!
