Unfortunately, they don't base admittance on the minimum GPA - it will depend on the cohort of students and their GPAs, entrance exam scores and other considerations for the program. That is what they will take a look at and most people will have above what is considered the minimum GPA in a competitive program. That is what I am struggling with!!! I think the average GPA accepted in nursing programs around here is 3.7 and above, but the minimum GPA is 2.5 to even be considered!

So, what I would do is find out the statistics for those being accepted into the programs you are considering and then figure out what you need to do to match those statistics!

This is excellent advice! Our program's minimum GPA for acceptance is 2.5. However, the average accepted applicant has a 3.5 or higher. Just making the minimum doesn't guarantee you'll get in. We had a points-based admissions process, so the higher your GPA, the more points you received. They also gave points for completion of all co-reqs, taking Micro lab, completing CNA, Phlebotomy or EMT-Basic, paid HCE hours and volunteer hours. The pre-nursing advisor makes it clear that you need at least a 3.5 to make your application competitive. They'll look for other ways to bolster your points through paid HCE or volunteer hours, but you get more points for GPA than anything else.

So, talk to your nursing advisor and get their honest opinion if your application is competitive enough.

Most of my grades are B-s, some Bs, 1 A, and 1 A-. So this is a 4.0 scale. 2.97 is a B-. Almost a B.

Trenata.....I know you're post is old, but I am curious as to how your nursing career is going? I have 2 C's in classes (History and Composition 2) that I took 20 years ago. I really don't want to retake them if I don't have to. I have A's in everything else. I was wondering how things worked out for you.

It all depends on your school, which classes you have lower grades in, and how many people are applying that time around. A classmate of mine got into my school's nursing program with two C's on his transcript (both in English), while another classmate of mine was wait-listed a couple quarters later when she had a 3.9 GPA.

Thanks! That makes sense.
