are you burnt out too?

after 10 years, I am burnt. I'm burnt of the politics, hostil environments, and most of all the paperwork. How do I revitalize my nursing inner child? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.:angryfire

earle58..I had done some online research in home health and many home health workers say they are overloaded with paperwork. The other thing that holds me back is worry about the neighborhoods youre sent into?..and of course driving all over in our winters here..I'm not the best winter driving..I guess I had my heart set on research, or some kind of diabetic or cardiac teaching since I so enjoy teaching patients but cant find enough time. If I didnt need the family hospitalization I would have already "walked away"..I know there are worse jobs, and sometimes I feel I complain too much...I try to keep myself strong and fit so I can do this 10 or more years more...but I dont know!!...plus I work with other nurses, 55-60 who take more breaks and "cant lift b/c of (fill in the blank)..and just "have to sit down"...they hide when a transporter comes back with a heavy patient and needs help!...If youve had a positive experience in home health..let me know..

i think you would benefit from posting all questions in the home care nsg forum. i know of one nurse who left dialysis to join the home health ranks, and is loving it. if you would like to contact her, pm me and i'll hook you guys up.

You sound like me. I work casual to avoid the politics, the dealing with people who have been in their jobs way too long and enjoy picking you to pieces. I rarely work more than four days a week and never more than three back to back.

Luckily my staffing office realizes the value of casual nurses and are willing to support us. A four hour shift is exactly that, the hospital pays me for every minute I'm kept after the fourth hour.

Can anyone tell me why report can take up to 40 minutes and the unit expects us to donate 25 minutes of our lives to them???

Hi,

I was burned out the first week on the floor & knew I had to get out. I have been working since I was 15 yrs old & never worked as hard as my first week on that floor last July 2005. I knew I had to find a way out of bedside. I now work as a nurse in an insurance company and I love it. Plus I get paid more.

Thank you Jesus!!

:wakeneo: it always makes me sad to hear so many nurses unhappy in their profession. whenever anyone asks me if i like being a nurse, i can honestly say, "yes." 30 years and i still love it. sure administrations suck, the hours are long, my feet hurt at the end of a 10 hour shift, etc....but i still love taking care of my patients.

i think one thing that has helped prevent burnout is changing areas every few years. i've worked on surgery floors, psych, neurology, home health, o.r., p.a.c.u. and same day surgery. the variety keeps it interesting. i tell others i may get exhausted but never bored.
