Burnt Out and tired !

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I have been an LPN since 2011 and an RN since 2014 . I am only 28 but I am beyond tired !  Mentally and physically . I've tried Med surg , ortho , mental health , home health , Hospice and LTC . Between toxic management and gossiping / bullying from coworkers I am ready to quit nursing all together . I've always heard it " Gets better" but I'm starting to doubt that . I've considered going back to school but I'm in debt and not looking to take out more loans .  I've heard great things about tele health and have been applying for remote positions for about a year now  but I haven't heard anything back . I am getting to the point where I am thinking about working in less stressful positions like a library or a bakery .  Has anyone dealt with feeling trapped ? I am just looking for advice.

You can find NUMEROUS threads echoing your sentiments on this site, especially lately. So, yes, many others here have reported feeling trapped in the nursing field.

Some of what you point out as far as management and coworker issues you're going to find in almost any field. There's nowhere that's immune because people are people no matter the business. One of the keys is to really pick the things that you choose to let influence you.

No real advice, just wish you all the best.

Well, it sounds like you've tried different areas like med surg , ortho, mental health , home health, hospice and LTC, danni. It's not like you've given the nursing profession a good chance.

Like JBMmom, there's really no advice that I can give you, but I can tell what happened to me when I made a decision to give up nursing. Maybe you can find something helpful to aid you in your endeavor and decision.

I'd worked at a community mental health clinic for five years wearing many, many hats. During those five years, among the other stressors of life, I experienced being stabbed by a patient, was a first responder at a fatal MVA, had civil nd criminal charges brought against me, and received treatment for a cancerous colon polyp.

I was terminated unfairly, got unemployment benefits, and found  new position at another community mental health clinic as a NS. After a year there, I was again terminated unfairly and decided to give up nursing and do freelance art.

About a month after my termination, a nursing position found me, where I made more money working fewer hours.

I worked at that position for 17 more years, before being "Fired & Retired".

Here's hoping that you too, danni, will have a fitting position find you!

Thank you for sharing your story !

I have no advice, because I currently am experiencing similar feelings myself.   I've worked as a nurse manager in a SNF/LTC facility for 17 months and am drained from all of the long hours I've put in and the stress associated with the job.  I'm still contemplating what my next actions will be as I do enjoy some aspects of my position.  I would just love to have a day where I do not feel so fatigued! Anyway, I know this isn't much help, but just know you aren't alone with those feelings!

Best wishes ?

I see the common theme is being unfairly blamed and punished. You have tried many areas within a short period.Nursing right now is in turmoil  due to the pandemic giving many hospitals the freedom to treat you like a piece of furniture. Not that it was so great pre pandemic ...just not as bad as this with no voice within administrations structure.Try changing jobs not areas, learn  your area well to the expert level you might like it better.I would also suggest counseling, works wonders with dealing with your own support  family and toxic work units, lazy managers, bullies.Only we know how much we can tolerate but with counseling you might feel more in control of what you will do next.Good luck to you.
