Hello To All,
Anyone attending Bunker Hill Community College in Boston for the ADN program? I will be starting there in January of 09 and just wanted to know from some insiders how the program is or how the instructors are? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
I there,
i thought of moving to Boston from the Uk with my son to study nursing. However retrogression was one of the reasons that made me think twice, and the other was that college's want you to pass all science subjects with 75% or C score otherwise we could be out of the program. I was devasted by this because my son has light autism and last time i was in Boston met people willing to help him with schools, specially in the Brookline schools..still it seems like a huge axe over your head as an international student and a single parent to take on, supposing if i was to score below that mark 75% i could loose his school , be out of the program and the US and lost money that i need for me and him. It really its so devastating, that score issue for if it was not for that the litle one's future well ..could be so different, anyway for that reason i'm considering getting into nursing in the Uk and then after passing theNClex etc move there, sadly it will be 4 years later ..and a possible crucial loss for his development.
Just out of curiosity how are the evaluations there done?? as essays as in the UK or multiple choice questions or both?? Any comments would be great...Thanks so much!!

Carla,
To apply to any nursing program here, you must take your prerequisites (i.e.: Anatomy and Physiology, etc.). I am not at all saying your prerequisite course grades will be completely indicative of your nursing course grades, once you're in the program, but it will at least give you an idea of how you'll fair in the program. What I recommend more strongly, however, is to take ALL "co-requisites", which are courses required to be taken in addition to the core nursing courses (i.e.: Microbiology) and then enter into Bunker Hill's program, for instance, with only the core nursing courses remaining to be taken. Your odds of achieving a 75 or higher are much better with all of those out of the way.
There is reason behind the 75 minimum final score in each course...quality control. If you're not even scoring C's in the nursing courses, you're not likely to pass the NCLEX. In addition, nursing schools are judged on their pass rates...so it makes sense for them from a business perspective to add that filter, greatening their chances of having higher pass-rates in their student population. Furthermore, if you're getting 75s...nursing might not be for you and it might be the best thing to learn about yourself before you invest any more time or money into the endeavor.
I think if you have done/do well on your prerequisites and you get most of your co-requisites out of the way, you should be able to come over here and successfully get through schooling. Good luck.
Laurenlynne,
Thanks for your reply it sures helps to understand a bit better how people go around it in order to lessen any future difficulties.
Can we do the co - requisites and the prerequisites online? If so do you know where? I will continue to ponder the situation well before taking any decision, it is just harder to decide because to take any risks at all i possibly could do the Rn program here in the Uk. The hardest part is the litle one, my son that i just wish he could go into a school that cares and knows how with ASD pupils.
Thanks again
Carla
Carla,
I know Bunker Hill does offer online courses....as do many universities here in Massachusetts. I would do a quick search of University of Massachusetts (they have locations in Boston, Amherst, Dartmouth and Lowell) in addition to Bunker Hill.
I don't know if you can re-take a course and keep the higher of the two grades...I don't think so, but I could be wrong. They'd see your old grade on your transcript anyway. You could "withdraw" from the course by the deadline set by the school (if you feel you're doing poorly) and re-take the course at a later time. That way, you wouldn't have a poor grade but a notation that you withdrew (you can cite the circumstances to admissions, should they inquire).
Good luck Carla.
Laurenlynne,
Thanks, i have already checked Bunker Hill theyseem to do some online courses, equally i have found a few other at Mass Bay community college, online section. I will have to look further into it though.
It was really nice of you to take the time to reply, i have really appreciated, thanks,
Carla
Hi all,
Im thinking of applying to BHCC, and i was wondering if any one could give me information on the necessary pre reqs, how to apply to the college to do them should i just fill out the general application form or should i speak to someone in admissions first, this is my first time doing something like this and im a little confused. any advice or info would be greatly appreciated :)
hi,
bunker hill has almost all of your questions answered on their website:
you should apply to the nursing program, as it's separate from the general admission into the school. there are a bunch of little steps to take and i think by the end of the process, the most diligent make it into the program.
good luck.
