Bunker Hill Community College -Boston
Laurenlynne, Thanks for your reply it sures helps to understand a bit better how people go around it in order to lessen any future difficulties. Can we do the co - requisites and the prerequisites online? If so do you know where? I will continue to ponder the situation well before taking any decision, it is just harder to decide because to take any risks at all i possibly could do the Rn program here in the Uk. The hardest part is the litle one, my son that i just wish he could go into a school that cares and knows how with ASD pupils. Thanks again Carla

University of Calgary - BNAT
Hi there folks, I have been to Calgary roughly 3 years ago and it sured seemed a very friendly place with some good specialist schools for my son. As a matter of fact the litle one can get a Canadian passport anytime because his dad was born in Alberta , sadly that will not do nothing for my status. As i am considering all options mostly around ASD schools, and calgary has some i was wondering what are the pre-requisites for the nursing program in Calgary, how much would it cost etc.. Thanks so much in advance for any information...carla (UK)

Bunker Hill Community College -Boston
I there, i thought of moving to Boston from the Uk with my son to study nursing. However retrogression was one of the reasons that made me think twice, and the other was that college's want you to pass all science subjects with 75% or C score otherwise we could be out of the program. I was devasted by this because my son has light autism and last time i was in Boston met people willing to help him with schools, specially in the Brookline schools..still it seems like a huge axe over your head as an international student and a single parent to take on, supposing if i was to score below that mark 75% i could loose his school , be out of the program and the US and lost money that i need for me and him. It really its so devastating, that score issue for if it was not for that the litle one's future well ..could be so different, anyway for that reason i'm considering getting into nursing in the Uk and then after passing theNClex etc move there, sadly it will be 4 years later ..and a possible crucial loss for his development. Just out of curiosity how are the evaluations there done?? as essays as in the UK or multiple choice questions or both?? Any comments would be great...Thanks so much!! Carla

UK Nursing Programs?
Hi there again and happy holidays to everyone both away and in the uk. I was really worried about those extra clinicals and theory we will need to make in Obstetrics, mental health and pediatrics, in order to work in the US. I have looked in several universities and the choices are all the same : Adult / child/ or mental health only specialization, there seems to be no option to do all the others at all during the degree. What i have found however, was that in all the same Universities, on their (continuing professional education page) they all seem to offer modules on the above) child or pediatrics, mental health etc..would that work?? If anyone would like to check it out (Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge Uk) as a pretty well organised and easy to navegate page)could these modules be a solution, i hope so it would help so many of us..Carla Carla

Moving to Boston
Hi there, I am studying for a BSN in the Uk and after that would love to move to Boston, mainly because i have this cutest child with ASD and nothing in terms of help or individualised education for him here, which breaks my heart, i have also been there in Boston several times and could see the schools were great. As I understand in the US the study program for an RN is far more generalized than the Uk, and that at the end of the degree i might have to top up with some hours of pediatrics, and mental health...i have decided to do the degree here as i was told if you don't pass with 75% you could be out of the program, and i could not afford to take that chance for the reasons stated above,..does anyone here have had the chance to meet any foreign Uk educated nurses and know what was that they had to do to find a job there...many thanks in advance . carla

anyone applying to the simmons dix scholars program?
Hi there, i have heard of the Simmons College, but i had no knowledge they did a 2 year BSN in nursing..i am considering doing the Degree here in the Uk and then try to find work in Massachussets. From what i understood from other members the grading can be very though and if one falls below the expected 75% will be out of the programm. I was wondering with the Simmons college if anyone knows how does it work ? This is because i have a budget and a child , so i cannot take uneccessary chances...Any thoughts welcome...thanks in advance.. carla

what are the core modules for nursing in the Uk
Hi there, I will be starting a nursing degree next September in Cambridge Uk. Previous to that i looked at studying in the US and got a lot of acess to the modules i would otherwise be doing , such as anatomy, physiology etc. I got some information from cambridge University and its mentioned something rather different ( people as individuals, public health and primary care etc) How can it be so different, does anyone from the UK had a subject (module they think its particularly difficult) i know some people i got to know in the US struglled with having to memorize Anatomy...what abouth math for nursing is that an issue... Thanks so much in advance for any ideas...Carla..UK

studying nursing in the UK or Boston ,,and informed decisions
Thanks everyone, Your replies have indeed been really helpful. Because i am going through a divorce right now my budget needs to be applied with as much cautious as i can master. I also have a child with ASD, and i cannot afford to make many mistakes if any. The main concern for me about Boston and i find it quite puzzling was the fact that grading in the US, can be so rigid or so it seems. As it was mentioned there; if one falls behind a grade you can be sent out of the program, which is a situation i find difficult to understand. Some students must invest quite a some of money or loans to study and the chances to repeat the modules are not there ..how will they manage? How can you garantee to be so good all the time? I am sorry, just confused..however i can not afford to take that risk ...but once again i am thankful for your suggestions, as rebuilding my life it is scary enough as it is. God bless!Carla

studying nursing in the UK or Boston ,,and informed decisions
Hi there, really i want to thank both elkpark and silver dragon for your suggestions and insight it was trully apreciated, and i think i will be going for the degree here in the Uk as to go to all the lenght of applying for visas and the college being so strict on grading nursing students there in the US, it too much to risk for now on a limited budget. Perhaps at some point in future i will then be keen to still attempt work in MA...anyway one day at the time...once again thanks and GOD bless!Carla

Future of NHS Pension, your views?
Hi there everyone, I am looking at starting the nursing diploma next September, but i am also increansingly discouraged by the nursing wages nurses enjoy in the US compared to ours in the UK. What the government seems to be doing with pensions is indeed regrettable and most likely will backfire. Some time ago the US nursing situation was also pretty dire, they were over stretched, not well paid etc, which lead to a huge shortage of nurses and compromised patient care. However today that has changed i was in MA a couple of months ago , and the nurses along other medical staff wore their uniforms real proud as they are now looked upon as fundamental pieces in a hospital setting along side doctors and take a look at their salaries it surely reflects that. I can't imagine we can honestly feel that up about nursing in the Uk and again things usually change they just seem to always take longer than elsewhere...unless we make our voices a litle more heard!!! carla

studying nursing in the UK or Boston ,,and informed decisions
Dear all, My name is carla, i am a mum of a 12 year old gorgeous boy. I recently became single :oand have now decided to pursue a career in nursing wich was always a dream of mine. My son has some special needs related to ASD, and for that reason i have been a mum full time, but ironically the divorce i am going through at the moment as with most everything in life as provided me the (get up and go ) needed to just maybe afford to begin to be myself. I have the possibility to study both in the US Boston, ( because Boston is familiar to me, and have a friend there) or study in cambridge UK, which is HOME. The difficulty with deciding what is best is because whatever money available i have got right now ...if i make a mistake not only i am risking the opportunity of my career but my son's quality of life too. The RN nursing program in the UK is 3 year and it is free, no fees...for uk nationals...but the cost of living will be for 3 years...In Boston it is 2 years....or LPN on a community college, such as Bunker Hill or Mass bay, and that go back another year for the RN... A key aspect that i would like to have some information on is if during the actual period one is studying at college in the US do you guys have essays to write, or tests, in other words how is assessment done by the college in those months you are studying and attending classes?? and i don't mean the Nclex PN or NCLEX RN ...i refering if there is any others assessments done meanwhile...any information would be very useful as it will help me to decide where could i get more value for money but also which program is easier taking in account that i still need to be a very present mum. One other reason why i have also consider the US is because there is so many possibilities and social skills groups for litle guy that even if i end up studying in the Uk i would like to belive that sometime in future i could apply for a green card for nurses and relocate to Boston not only because i really liked it there, but also because there seems to be a significant difference in salaries for RN's in MA and cambridge or the Uk in general... If anyone could share some light in how assessments are done with the LPN and or RN before the NCLEX and how manageable you have found it it would really be awseme. Thanks so much in advance ,,,God bless..Carla
