Bullying at work

Published

Question for you all: how can I deal with bullying and verbal abuse, harassment, and sometimes physical abuse from a co-worker who is of another race without being labelled with 'oh she's only complaining because so and so is black'??? This girl and I went to school together, but I have a year more experience than she does on our unit. Lately I've become the least popular person on our rotation and she has become the favorite while in the process belittling me and my experience/skills what have you. I need to address it with our nurse manager, but she even warned us before this girl came to us that we didn't need to mess with her because she'd be the type to accuse us of being racist. I'm on the verge of leaving my job that I love because it continues to get worse and other nurses agg her on. Thanks guys!

Without reading the other comments, here is my pov.

I have been in your shoes in nursing school. I started being bullied by one of my classmates, because at time I would ask or repeat what the professor said, to confirm it, because English is not my first language.

One day, as we were sitting in the cafeteria, my bully colleague expressed her " annoyance" with me repeating things. She went full on : This is what annoys me about you, etc etc etc

Then in clinicals she and her best friend kept attacking me again and again.

It is really a shame that this nurturing profession is attracting so many bullies. You cant possibly say that this is a OBN syndrome (old bitter nurse). No. I honestly think that bullying has nothing to do with age. Psychopaths belong to all ages.

Please don't let them get to you. They're Ill. Wish them good luck in recovery, walk away, and never look back.

I can see how frequent clarification requests could be extremely disruptive to everyone else in the class. You should not have been attacked, but a solution should have been sought ...maybe a recorder could have been used or a study partner could have clarified things with you after the class was over.

In any case, it looks like you successfully made it through the program ...so I guess you did what you had to do at the time.

Even dogs get bullied.

Many years ago, my terrier was affraid of the neighbors bull dog because he always cornered my dog and ate my dogs food and. stold her toys.

I've seen two 90 year old men bullying each other

Considering we have higher IQ than dogs or other animals, I would hope that as humans, we can rise above that.

The sad reality is, some are still operating by cave mentality.

2 or 3 clarifications per session are not that many. As a matter of fact, this happened only in one class, where a certain profession had an accent themself, but obviously it was easier for someone who is not ESL to understand what they were saying.

And that was not the only instance.

Funny how some here think the recipient of bullying is part guilty.

She didn't have a "problem" with me, she just liked the sick feeling of putting others down I guess. I wasn't her only "victim".
