Question for you all: how can I deal with bullying and verbal abuse, harassment, and sometimes physical abuse from a co-worker who is of another race without being labelled with 'oh she's only complaining because so and so is black'??? This girl and I went to school together, but I have a year more experience than she does on our unit. Lately I've become the least popular person on our rotation and she has become the favorite while in the process belittling me and my experience/skills what have you. I need to address it with our nurse manager, but she even warned us before this girl came to us that we didn't need to mess with her because she'd be the type to accuse us of being racist. I'm on the verge of leaving my job that I love because it continues to get worse and other nurses agg her on. Thanks guys!

What "physical abuse" have you been subjected to?
Is there a reason why this girl is the "favorite" and you are the "least favorite"?
Who is "us" when you talk about the nurse manager warning "us"?
What was your relationship like with this person in school?

Ask her why she acts like this. And really, any physical abuse call the cops. Don't bother withfacility security.

Why on earth would your manager warn you ahead of time about this nurse? How would such a person even get hired if management knew ahead of time that she would cause trouble? If she is putting her hands on you in any way, that's not abuse, it's assault! If that's the case, first I would notify my manager, then HR, then the police!

If you are being bullied at work, document the events, have a meeting with your manager, and be prepared to talk to HR and Risk Management. I agree with others, if you are being physically abused, press charges. Never cry wolf.

It doesn't add up. Why would anyone in their right mind hire someone who is trouble from the get-go? I don't get it. If it's true and the manager DID hire this person knowing all this---- and if I really am to believe she IS the favorite and you are the "least" favorite----- then I am afraid your days are numbered there. And that is for the best. Move on, if this is at all true.
Good luck

Yup. It reeks of bridges and those who dwell under them. However, it is entirely possible that this Nasty Nancy was forcibly transferred into the OP's unit by administrators who had to remove her from her previous unit because of problems she'd caused but were unable to produce enough documentation to fire her. In this scenerio, it is possible that the manager called together her senior staff or those who may be precepting Nancy upon her arrival in their unit to caution them about how to proceed. If you're expecting trouble and expecting the troublemaker to play the race card when confronted with issues, it may not be CORRECT to discuss that with your staff, but it does happen. I've been the preceptor to such a Nasty Nancy and was warned to "Document, document, document."
On the other hand, has anyone been to Seattle to see what dwells underneath the Aurora Bridge?

I wish I could find the photos I took of the child climbing on it. She couldn't believe the VW was REAL!
