Hey there! This is a tread for anyone trying to get into the May nursing program in Broward College. Have you guys completed everything we need?
I still have to take my HESI and I am half way done with the Health Core class. I am so nervous. I am still not completely sure on how BC does the admission criteria, but I have high hopes.
Leave anything below. Lets help each other out :)
Is it the short hair lady with the island accent at the front? Ya she is rude to everyone!!! She's pretty much always wrong with everything she tells me and i always take pride in proving her wrong? Yea yea it might be gloating but she deserves it with her attitude. Don't let that one thing deter you because I am sure we will be facing a lotworst in the program so just learn to brush stuff like that off. All the offices I've experienced someone rude and I think it's because they have to deal with so much and then sometimes take it out on us.
Yes it is!! Haha even the other ladies up there with her started to back me up and say that Nichole did not know about the binder for North campus. Some people are just plain rude!
& I also just got the email from North. How did orientation go for everyone at Central? Were people wearing the polos/scrubs? Also.. I'm assuming since they attached the orientation packet in the email for us that we don't have to buy one from the bookstore?
Just got out of orientation there is A LOT of information. The dean went over all the policies and all our questions. We were provided with our syllabus for theory and lab including schedules and book lists. We all wore regular clothes but I don't know if it's different for the other campus. We also had someone speak to us about ways to be successful including time management. Take a lot of notes because they will give you a lot of useful information!
Orientation was great, we are all so close to starting the next chapter in our lives.
I'm full of anticipation, excitement, also a little overwhelmed (and thinking I'm a little crazy for taking this on)
But this is my passion and I know in my soul I am in the right place and its the right time for myself
Some advice from the orientation, mainly from Italia (Health Sciences Counselor) she leads student success course if a student fails, withdrawals, retracks for any reason
Do not study more than 2-3 hours at a time ---then take 1 hour break
Will need to find 35 hours of study time during the week about 5 hours a day to be successful
Read before lecture (Theory)
read necessary chapter before lecture and highlight imp. according to Nursing Module and Objectives
Go to lecture and take notes
Within 3 to 4 hours of class (theory) review lecture notes and/or skim highlighted chapters
Create own study notes in own words within 24 hours of that lecture (gain meaning about material)
Create outlines, charts, organize material best fits your learning style (ex: create own audio about material)
During the week you want to review that new lecture material 2 different times
Also review all of your old notes 2 different times during that week
Review can be creating own notes, doing Nclex questions, reviewing with study group, teaching someone
3 or two days before exam review newest content and work backwards
You need to review each section of material 8 to 10 different times and in different ways
*** These were some of her main recommendations for preparing for information Theory*****
She mentoined starting to read now in Perry and Potter Fundamentals
She recommended getting Fundamentals for Success; Test for Success and a Nurse Care Plan book by Myers
start reading the Success books now to help start thinking like a nurse before class starts
which is on a Application and Analysis perspective (Knowledge and Comprehension are lower levels of understanding)
must be able to apply everything via M/C questions on tests and clinically at hospital ** and Analyze
So that is some of what I gained from Italia, she knows her stuff because she works with every student who hits a bump in the road during their time in the nursing program.
My roommate graduated from the program and she says nearly 50 % of students retrack for some reason
My other roommate failed out and had to get her LPN, and now she is back
You should get a jump on chapter readings Theory (this is from Central Theory Syllabus, so may be different other campuses
Exam 1
Activity and Exercise
Patient Safety
Infection Control
Hygiene
Vital Signs
Specimen Collection (Urine, fecal, sputum)
Physical Assessment
Diagnostic Tests and Special Procedures (don't know if this is in book)
If you have time the first chapters I read were
Critical thinking in Nursing Practice
and the chapters for Nursing Process (Assessment, Diagnosis, Planning, Implementing, Evaluation)
**these aren't long chapters but gave me better understanding on how to think like a nurse and began a foundation about the nursing process (these chapters aren't due until Exam 2 but will help understand the exam 1 chapters
Hope this helps and whatever the outcome is for any of us I pray we accept what life delivers us and continue moving in a positive direction. Let your purpose be greater than any obstacle that you might need to overcome. ONE

Thank you so much for taking the time out to post all this useful information. I appreciate it because for those of us going to south campus, our orientation isn't until May 9th. This gives me ideas as to what I should start reading. So helpful!!! Good luck @jboogs49 ?
I have to vent about the $27 polo shirts, a shirt!!! I don't spend that on shirts when I'm going out. Lol. Vent over. Anyone going to North Campus I have a pack of ID badge holders available if anyone wants one, I have 11 left.
Vent away! I think the price of all the uniform pieces are on the expensive side. I only bought one of everything so far, that's all I could afford. I planning on getting 2 more pairs of scrubs at the end of this week. Does anyone know what bottoms are acceptable to wear with the polo shirts and where we are allowed to wear them?
