Broward college Nursing Jan 2015

Published

Hello, this is a thread for any current nursing students at Broward college or those who have recently been accepted. I'm a bit confused on Broward's admission criteria. What classes exactly do they use to calculate the gpa?

Time is very limited in the first semester. The first week for sure you will not have time to breathe! I would read everything I need to (you'll get the topics for the 1st test at orientation) prior to. It's goingg I save you lots of time.

first week:

lecture twice a week (mon and fri 9-12 but it usually ran to 1)

clinical twice a week (8am-6pm but again it ran over)

math (1:30-4:30pm once a week)

pharm (5-7pm once a week)

in between you have to fit reading for lecture AND lab (which are LONG chapters), practicing math, taking care of kids/fam, washing your uniforms, and doing the STAT homework (you'll be entertained with that for a bit). Oh and note taking. And organizing yourself (printing out forms etc etc)

second week has the same schedule but only one day of clinicals

After return demo (and passing math) there's a bit more time. Don't let it fool you though. We had our final and exam

three in the same week. So be prepared for that.

I work 25 hours a week (but I make my own hours) and have a family (husband, kids) and survived so it's doable. It will not be an easy transition if you're not super organized though

I stopped going to math because I'm good at math and one girl in my study group is a math so it wasn't too bad. It's basic math - ratios, decimals, long division, and conversion factors. There are fractions. No calculator. Work must be shown and you need to use the rounding rules given. BC rounding rules are completely different. I made sure to write the rounding rule first on the paper per problem so I wouldn't forget.

Oh! I almost forgot! Don't buy the polo shirts just get scrubs. You can only wear the polo shirts with the scrub bottoms (no jeans etc)

Great! Good to know! Thanks again so much for taking time out of your VERY busy schedule to fill us in on the program. One last question (I promise) which campus are you going to? Hope the rest of your classes go well!

No worries we're on spring "break" so it's not too bad ;)

I go to central. The times and days for classes change per campus but the hours are the same. That will be your schedule. I think I'm orientation they said it was like 20-25 hours on class time alone and then 40-45 hours of recommended study time.

Cool! Thanks again for all the advice and info! Enjoy the rest of your spring "break"

I wanted to add to the previous comment about the schedule. During the first 4 weeks or so (before Return Demo) you spend most of your time in the Nursing Lab practicing skills. This is hours spent on your own time. For me, I was in school everyday except Wednesdays and Sunday's during the first 4-5 weeks including Saturday's until 4. Taking the time to practice in the lab is very useful and beneficial to pass return demo.

I am not very good with math, so I went to every class (only about 4 classes including the test day). I found it helpful and I passed with a 100% the first time around.

I have to admit the program is time consuming, and I recommend not working; however, it is not impossible. If you have great time management skills than you should be okay. I do not work, but I do find time to cook/clean and be a wife. After return demo it becomes a little easier but yes that last week was very difficult with two tests. On a good note, I know a few people who did not so good on 1/2 tests but came through on the last 2 tests and are now going to Process 2. Never give up! :) I'm also on Central campus!

I forgot about the 12 hours of

lab (minimum) before return demo. I did 4 hours a week every week

Wow thanks bfernandez143! That's great advice. Yeah I'm not great in math either and right now I'm working full-time but I am quitting my job when we start the program and plan on returning part time after I get through this first semester. Hopefully it all works out!

Thank you so much for all the information. Really nice to see other students helping us! :D

I am at North Campus.

The first 4 weeks of the program is extremely time consuming but once you manage your time wisely and get organized you'll be good to go.

My schedule was:

Monday/Friday Process 1 Lecture - 9AM-12 PM

Wednesday Process 1 Clinical - 7:30AM-7:00 PM (The first week only its both Tuesday & Wednesday)

You can either choose math on Thursday or Friday but I had Friday 1-5 PM.

For return demo, North Campus required 5 mandatory lab hours but its not enough if you want to pass return demo on your first attempt. I practically spent as much time I could practicing. Between reading 10-15 chapters for each exam and reading for clinical, most of your time will be spent reading. The first 2 exams are 50 questions and the final is 100 questions. Also the grading scale for the Nursing Program is different than the regular courses. I think a 92 - A, 83 - B, 73 - C so you want to get the highest possible grades on the first 2 exams. I passed Process 1 with a B which was very difficult, I was disappointed that I didn't get an A. But hopefully in Process 2 I will. Pharmacology is easy, the Professor gives good reviews and once you study you'll be good. All the professors want you to pass but it's up to you to make the commitment.

Thanks for sharing your experience this far Neeza0930! So glad to hear positive things about program. Looks like we should all be spending lots of time in the lab (which I was planning on doing anyway) I think that will make a big difference. U have to be dedicated not just do the minimum and think you're going to pass with flying colors. Would love to hear from someone at south campus! Anyone out there??! Lol! Guess with spring break going on right now can't expect to hear too much. Thanks for all of you that have shared your experience I have already passed on the advice to everyone in the May thread and will pass along yous as well Neeza0930! Thanks again! ;) :)
