Broward College nursing fall 2018

Published

Hi! I know it's pretty early to start a thread for fall but I just wanted to see somewhat of what other people have in their classes and HESI. I have to retake the anatomy portion of the test but everything else I passed, and I have a GPA of 3.18. Also, I was in another nursing program before this and didn't do so well because of what was going on in my life during that time. Do you think this will be a big issue regarding getting in??

Hey no problem, fundamentals of nursing by Perry and potter 9th edition I believe is the latest. You can always rent it from Amazon for $20 which makes me think a new edition is probably coming out for the fall which will probably be in the bundle they'll offer u. So if u want to read ahead, that would be the best way and I definitely recommend doing it. You can start reading infection prevention n control, vital signs, health assessment and physical assessment, patient safety, activity and exercise, hygiene, that's all I remember for now

Do you know if you need to have the latest edition? Also is this just a good book to read ahead or is this a required book for the first semester?

The 9th edition has been used for 1st semester classes since fall 2017. If a new edition comes out for fall 2018 then ull probably need the latest edition, that's why renting at $20 right now is really cheap if u want to own it ahead of time and start reading before u actually get the list of books u'll need.

It is the book you'll be using for theory class, it's not extra material, the point of reading ahead is that 90% of people run out of time to read all chapters by testing time, and even worse can't even go over what they've read cuz there is simply no time. So reading ahead is an advantage that u'll know what professors talk about from day 1 (cuz sometimes they talk about things they think its common sense but for someome new into the field its brand new info, so u r lost) and u won't run out of time.

Thank you so much!

And just some two cents as a grad..

1) yes, BC grads are highly regarded. Had a job lined up before I even graduated.

2)learned alot in a short amount of time.

3) I worked 30 hours a week. I have no kids, moved back in with family to attend this program to make it easier.

4) I found the clinical instructors to be so amazing. Push you to truly apply and learn all of your skills.

Like Paulita said very eloquently, this program graduates a very specific set of students; those who can hit the ground running and don't need outside help. These are generally students who seem to learn best by reading and answering questions. Be aware, their retention rate is less than 36% and thats for all 3 campuses. That means most everyone who starts this program will not reach graduation.

That being said...nursing school will only teach you enough not to injure someone. For such an intense program, I did not personally feel that yheir atmosphere helped at all in handling real life nursing.

So if you're NEED a supportive environment and different ways to learn the material; there are OTHER programs out there with better environments and ability to support you in away BC refuses to do.

Hi, I'm planning to enroll at Broward College for January 2019 and would like to know your tips for tackling Nursing Process 1? Will all the NP 1 eams be based on past NCLEX questions?

Thanks in advnce.

Hi all, im currently a student at BC nursing I thought I'd share some info with future students.

BC accepts the lowest GPAs (3.1-4.0) in South Florida but rest assured they will not keep poor students. So if this is ur 2nd chance at doing a career that generally doesn't accept GPA lower than 3.5, don't take it for granted. Only 7-10% of students make it through the whole program w/o failing at least once. If you fail twice, they send u to LPN school. Only 33% of every starting group will graduate. Every graduating group is made up of 95-120 students from all THREE campuses!!! That's 30-40 from every campus, now think about how many start

With that being said, you are guaranteed to graduate knowing what the hell you are doing, they have great professors except for very few. You really need to be committed to this journey from day 1 as you will fall behind otherwise, and if u do, it's impossible to catch up. Every test for theory every 3 weeks is made out of 7-10 chapters, now that's intensive, aside from the clinical hours (at least 11hrs every week), pharmacology and math hours. No one i know has passed the course w/o reading 90% of the 1300 pages book first semester.

If you have to work more than 16hrs to survive, if you have kids and no support to help u with them, if you are not sure if nursing is for you, u need to reconsider this program, at this school at least. BC nursing is proud to produce graduates who pass the nclex (95% or higher everytime) so they will not give away points, curb the grades, give extra credit, they won't do anything to help u, u have to survive on your own. So if your life situation is not close to perfect to allow you to be a full time student w/o distractions, I recommend u reconsider, or delay your registration. The program is designed to weed out most people 1st semester, thats why the workload is so heavy (4 classes) only those who really want it will make it. Because by 2nd semester you will be offered schorlarships from the hospitals we do our clinicals in, and they sure as hell want to make sure only those who are committed reach that level. By 2nd semester the workload decrease to half (2 classes) so if u really want to try, make sure that at least for 1st semester you have made your environment perfect to allow you to succeed.

It is possible to pass? Of course it is, it's not rocket science, you just really need to cover all material because none of it is common sense even though it's easy material. Until u learn to think like a nurse, guessing on tests will not be enough to pass, all answers are correct, so u need to choose the one that's most correct. And again, it's not common sense, it's knowledge that allows you to pick the right one. Good luck to everyone. I love going to the hospital, it's intimidating at first but overtime as u become more confident with what you do, you'll love helping people, hearing their stories and most importantly change your own lifestyle habits that have led many to these unfortunate circumstances. Very rewarding profession! I can't wait till I graduate

Also, were clinicals once a week, and who would you recommend for Microbiology before I enter the program?

Thanks in advance.

I am not in the nursing program yet (patiently waiting for my acceptance letter to hopefully come in the next 10 days) but I am taking Microbiology right now and will be done in the next two weeks. I have Christine Apter and she is very good. SUPER knowledgeable in the subject and makes a lot of references to nursing and what is good to know about microbiology when it comes to nursing. She understands that everyone if not all of us are in that class for the nursing program. She is more than willing to answer any questions you have and explains everything in extensive detail. She dedicates the day before every single exam to a review day. She provides you with Powerpoints and review sheets. Also every lab class there is a mini 5-question quiz (pretty easy) to prepare you for the mid term so you know what to expect. She also does a review in the beginning of class for the quiz and basically gives you the answer without directly giving it. She makes the class EASILY passable. It's a difficult class, A LOT to learn and you do need to study but with her resources and knowledge I am not as overwhelmed as I was in the beginning. I have gotten mostly A's and some B's in her class. Just remember: this class does not affect your overall GPA to get into the program, you just need to pass it and you're okay! That's what has helped me to not stress out so much lol.

Hi everyone,

Just to clarify, decisions go out within thirty BUSINESS days not calendar days (we do not work on the weekend). 30 business days is approximately June 27. Doesn't mean decisions won't go out before but our deadline is not June 15.

All the best,

Nichole

Okay thank you so much for clarifying! Do you happen to know about how long after the orientation usually is?

Usually about 2 weeks after. Just depends on room availability.

Thank you for the information. We know you are busy processing the many applications and we are anxiously waiting updates! Just a quick question, do you know by when we should have different updates in myBC about points and other stuff related to the application? Meaning, if we don't have points showing by XX date, should we be concerned or contact you all about the application?

There is no specific date. Right now we are admitting for two big programs (Radiography and RN). If you do not see points by the time decisions go out, then I would be concerned. :)

If you received an email stating we have your application, then it will be processed for the August term.

Thank you very much for the insight. I will either choose her or Khan for Microbiology. I'm trying to find the total number of questions for each section on the HESI A2 given by Broward College and I cannot find it, do you remember the breakdown?

I hope you get into the RN program and do well.
