Broward College May 2010 Acceptance

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hello all so I am very excited and happy because I was accepted to the RN program for May. I wanted to start a new thread for those who got accpeted to communicate with each other....feel free to leave any comments, advice, or questions.

As far as saving your seat, it's fine to defer until August. No one knows your personal situation better than yourself and therefore you know what's best. Just remember though that May is still two months away and maybe as the start of the program approaches you'll be in a better place and able to start along with us.

ps, Also, be careful because I believe the deadline for deferment is set for March 23rd (but do double check), if memory serves me correctly...

Wish you well.

The plus side to starting in Aug? You will only have one course that you will take during the short summer term. :) I started last August and my first summer term is coming up. I will be taking one course and then I will have the rest of the summer off. By my second summer, I will be done and graduating. The less courses I have to take in summer the better. If you start in May, you will be taking 3 courses during summer, not to mention taking your very first nursing class in a shorter term. Its perfectly fine to defer if you want.

thanks guys....so what would the schedule be like if I start in Aug...for example what would I take fall, winter, etc ?

RN2B,

I think (please chime in current students) you will still take the same classes as in any semester, but the May program is a few weeks shorter than the Aug or Jan start dates and therefore sounds more intense because their still going to cover the same amount of information in less time.

For myself, I'd rather start in May because I have kids and they'll have the summer off from school which will give me that much more time to apply to my studies, as I won't have to deal with their school schedules, projects, homework, etc. right from the start. This will also give them a chance to adjust to my new routine before they begin their new school year.

A lot of people love the lighter workload (Sunray, wink! And there's nothing wrong with that, lol) during summer break though and I can definitely see why. Beginning the program in May will probably not even allow enough time for a long weekend or mini vacation, sigh...

Every situation has it pros/cons, good/bad so sometimes (after careful consideration & weighing our options of course) we just have to pick one and go with it...

Starting in Aug, your schedule will go like this:

AUG-OCT 2010: Nursing Process 1

OCT-DEC 2010: Nursing Process 2

JAN-MAR 2011: GIGU

MAR-MAY 2011: Specialty 1 (Peds, OB, or Psych)

MAY-JUN 2011: Specialty 2 (Peds, OB, or Psych)

JUN-AUG 2011: OFF

AUG-OCT 2011: Specialty 3 (Peds, OB, or Psych)

OCT-DEC 2011: Ortho/Neuro

JAN-MAR 2012: Cardio

MAR-MAY 2012: Trends (and then you are DONE!)

Graduate: May 2012

If you started in May instead, it would be the same, just a semester ahead, so it would look like this:

MAY-JUN 2010:Nursing Process 1

JUN-AUG 2010: Nursing Process 2

AUG-OCT 2010: GIGU

OCT-DEC 2010: Specialty 1 (Peds, OB, or Psych)

JAN-MAR 2011: Specialty 2 (Peds, OB, or Psych)

MAR-MAY 2011: Specialty 3 (Peds, OB, or Psych)

MAY-JUN 2011: OFF

JUN-AUG 2011: Ortho/Neuro

AUG-OCT 2011: Cardio

OCT-DEC 2011: Trends (and then you are done!)

Graduation: Dec 2011

All the classes last 8 weeks, except during summer. Then its 6 weeks. Lectures are 3 hours long during regular semesters, and 4 hours long during summer semester.

for the first semester, saunder's is the best book to have.

I wish you the best on your new career. I had a baby during the program, and while I don't recommed to anyone having a baby during school, but it can be done. You just prioritize your time-- I stopped watching TV and my new friends were my books, and the rest-- of course the baby--.

I hope that you get lots of help with the little baby, because it will be hard working full time and doing school.... but like I said before, if you manage your time well, always put in your study time, it can be done.

Oh my!!!! I'm sitting here outside of the library trying to take it all in. My mind is still trying to process it all.. Lol. I'm excited just feeling overwhelmed right now not knowing where to even start..papers due, exam next week assignment tomorrow.. How did you all do it, any advice to organize myself better.. Thank you in advance

Well, first, I divided up the reading and read ahead for each topic. So let's say for Friday's lecture there were 200 pages of reading, i would divide the pages by the number of days and I would read that amount each day. I did this ahead of time so that it was all laid out for me. Then, I tackled one thing at a time. Whatever was due next had priority. What assignment do you have due? I can't remember all that I did at the beginning except for return demo. Anyway, lets say there's an assignment due next Wednesday 5/19, and then there's exam 1 on Monday 5/24 and return demo on Wednesday 5/26 I would focus on the assignment first, of course I would still be reading and studying, and then from Wednesday-Monday I would completely focus on studying for the exam, and then Monday afternoon until return demo I would be practicing. It's all about organization and prioritization. I'm not gonna lie, I was completely overwhelmed the first week. I was in tears telling my husband that I had no idea how I was going to do this. He believed in me and reassured me and somehow I got through it. I did feel a lot better after that first week and once we had the first exam. Practice taking NCLEX questions before the exam. I used the Fundamental Success and the Test Success and eventually I ended up buying the Saunder's NCLEX book, but that might not have been until NP2. Also, some of the reading in the skills book is a repeat of what you might have read in the fundamentals book, so when I saw the same thing repeated over, I skimmed through it. I didn't skip it, but I also didn't really invest the time really reading it either. I also suggest meeting the tutors in the library and asking them for organizational advice, time management advice and asking them to help you with any topics that you may be having trouble with. This is especially true with the topics for exam 2 in both NP1 and NP2.

The most important thing it to take a deep breath and take one day at a time. You will be overwhelmed if you look at the whole mountain and try to figure out how in the world you will climb it, but if you take it one step at a time, eventually you will be at the top. You have to stay positive and stay focused.
