this thread was created for those attending broward college central campus in january 2011!!

lets all communicate, get organized, share ideas, and support one another!

:yeah::heartbeat:nurse:

I'd love to meet up before class. I must admit that I'm a bit nervous!

Also you will need white socks that come just above the ankle. A friend in the program this semester said that is what they are to wear to clinicals with the white leather shoes.

And also, if you need to get a notary stamp, you can get a free one from the nursing admissions office. I did mine today there.

I'm kinda really annoyed this other orientation isn't sooner. I mean were all going to be so overwhelmed already, I feel like we all have so many questions that were never even close to being answered at the first orientation or we were in fear of asking because she was cranky and short with people. Plus their going to give us all this info on shoes, uniforms, ect. which isn't going to give us much time to go out and buy them! I like to buy stuff on internet because it's ALWAYS cheaper but if we don't get a clear answer on shoes I'll have wait and to go to store and spend more money! Annoying.

Also does anyone know where or who we turn our folders into???? Thanks =)

The paperwork goes to the nursing office in blg 8. Also, the brand Nurse Mates, are approved shoes. But I think you can only the ones with that are the full shoe, no open backs. I'm getting the "White Dove" ones. My friend in the program now has them and says they are easy to clean and keep clean because they have no laces and they are professor approved. I would just buy a brand that are made for the medical field. Then you should be fine.

I agree. Just stick to what is safe. Most of the time the college prefers all white shoes, fully covering your feet, with no back out. If u by all leather shoes, it is very easy to maintain. Nurse Mates have verrry good shoes. U cannot go wrong there. They may have a blue heart on the shoe (nurse mates logo/symbol) but that's ok because they are nursing shoes.

Has anyone turned the documents in yet?

Is there a store anywhere nearby that you can find these Nurse Mates shoes at?

Also, for anyone who might know- I'm looking for nursing pants that will match the color of the top we have to buy-anyone know of somewhere to go for that? A brand and color that matches perfectly (fits well)?

Anyone else NOT done their BLS course yet? :/ My husband and I are taking our course tomorrow somewhere in Miami Gardens, a 4 hour long course. (I wonder, do we get the card right then, or is mailed to us, or...? Hmm.) So glad we're getting it done tomorrow, as I was worrying about getting this done in time- the only other one we could find was a week before the deadline to turn everything in! So if anyone needs info on that class, let me know so I can get it to you. :) It's cheaper than Broward (plus I don't think there's any BLS class open at Broward in time anyway.)

My hubby and I went into the bookstore tonight after our Nutrition class and bought some uniforms! Haha, it's amazing how exciting such mundane things can be. I bet once we're in the program we'll be laughing at ourselves back in time. I wanted to make sure I got my uniform tops early since I've been hearing from various people that the smallest sizes sell out first.

By the way, the first day for financial aid at the bookstore is Dec. 6- and for those of you who aren't familiar, the lines are LONG, so bring some reading material. :)

The tops are $20 each. I bought an two XS Nursing scrub tops, and they DO have a fitting room and let you try things on (which I thought was awesome!), and the top is HUGE on me. I bought two because well, we're going to need a few, and also, because although I have financial aid (I'll get the money at some point so what's it really matter), I need the tops altered a lot; so better to get them both now so I can have them altered in time for classes. I suggest any ladies who are thin (okay, I myself am exceptionally thin, but I mean, even if you're just skinny, like, Taylor Swift/Natalie Portman skinny, like maybe 5'5 say and 105-110 lbs) to buy XS tops when you can and get them altered (you'll likely need to.) It's seriously like a bag on me.

I bought two polo shirts as well, as apparently Broward has 'recently' (that's what the elderly sales gentleman said to me) updated their classroom attire requirements to require Nursing students, just like Paramedic and EMT students, to need to wear identifying type shirts to their classes too, not just to clinicals. So we have to wear these polos to, say, Process I. I don't know about Pharm, but I'm guessing so. The XS Polo shirts are labeled very strangely...the salesman was helping me, and he handed me a blue polo in XS, which I guess is really a Children's XL. I wanted one in each color (they have white too), and that one said XL, but he said it was also an XS, it was the same scenario. Anyway, without trying them on, I could just tell they'd be huge on me too- so ladies, prepare youself for lots of alterations.

I don't know if we need to wear special pants to classes.

I've read these forums for a few semesters about all of the campuses and exactly what we're going through and have been going through, and not once did I notice (but maybe I didn't pay attention) to anyone saying anything about getting their uniform tops altered because they were too big. Did they just go to a different company this semester? Lol. Because I know I'm not the only one who will think this. Unless everyone else is just okay looking like a bag. I know we need to be 'comfortable moving about', because we'll be in a hospital, but this goes above and beyond that defitnition.

Anyway, LONG post.

Those interested in setting up a meeting at Starbucks sometime in December before classes, please private message me. I'm going to be away with my husband in D.C. from December 17-21, however, and of course the week of Christmas is not so great for me. Actually, we could do two meetings even. Maybe one in mid December, and maybe one January 3rd-that's the Sunday before classes. I guess classes begin on a Wednesday, not a Monday.

Hope all is well!

PS- Leah84, I'm not able to go to Solantic- they don't accept Medicaid, apparently. :( I'm just going to go to my primary care doctor. Maybe try and sweet talk the nurse into adding a few lbs to my chart ;) JK!

Question: Do WE fill out, on the first page of the physical sheet, the medical history part about illnesses and such? I thought I remember from Orientation something about them saying for us to only fill out the top part, and that's IT....But it seems like that's a part we would normally fill out. What did everyone who's already been do? Any the part on the first page which says, 'please indicate any health concerns, if any, you have'--did YOU fill that out before you saw the doctor, or...?? And the part under that, too-about allergies-do you fill that out or does the doctor? Also-can the nurse fill any of this information for the physical out such as height, weight, etc- because I know at a Dr office, it's usually the nurse that does that information.... but the Dr has to sign off on the physical.

Sorry, a lot of questions! And rants! To anyone who has actually read this whole post, and paid any sort of attention, congratulations, and thank you. :yeah:

U get the CPR card the same day. On the first day for financial aid, is the line long as well?

The whole time there is financial aid, there will be lines. I'm not sure when the ''slower'' times are, but if anyone does know them, please tell us! I've had to wait in line with my baby before, and that wasn't exactly a fun experience...

I am excited to start. Hopefully we can form study groups!

Holy cow so for fun I went to add/drop and looked at the classes left and there are a lot left for south and north! South had like 31 seats still for NUR process 1! And last day to register was yesterday...?!

Anyway, hope everyone has a good day! I'm getting super excited, I can't wait to start and meet everyone!! December 1st. is sneaking up on us so make sure everyone gets all there stuff done so you don't have to stress!! Remember physical takes couple+ days because they have to send titers to lab (For me it did) It's always better to leave room for error just in case. I would hate for anything to happen to anyone after we've come this far!! =)
